Chose to go with indochina junk's dragon's pearl on a 2d1n cruise to bai tu long bay after reading many positive reviews on TA and other sites. Bai tu long bay is like halong bay with all the beautiful rock formations, but more peaceful since most of the other cruise operators don't go there. we booked this trip through buffalo tours upon our arrival in hanoi for USD159, but other guests on the boat mentioned that their tours only cost $135 or something like that. It seems cheaper to book directly through their website.

Lunch and dinner on the first day was yummy with lots of seafood - mostly supplied by the fishing villages we visited on the second day. 2nd day's food was quite lacklustre in comparison. We visited a cave, kayaked and swam. got lucky with the weather.. on our return there was a storm and visitors could not sail out... there was no transport shuttling guests to the ferry terminal and as a result we waited ages before the van came to pick us up.

Our family (including 2 teenagers) enjoyed a 1 night, 2 day cruise with Indochina Junk and thoroughly enjoyed it, wishing that we could have done a longer trip. The itinerary is a good balance of relaxing, eating and activities. The boat was not overcrowded with only 17 people on our boat and it was a nice mix of people. Everything went as planned from the pick up to the return the next day. It is a long trip from Hanoi but is broken up with a stop along the way to stretch, browse and get something to eat. The food on board the ship was more European/Asian fusion rather than straight Vietnamese food (which we would have rather preferred), but good none the less. Definitely worth doing if visiting Hanoi!

We had a great experience with our 4 and 6 y.o. children on the "Princess," which we visited last week. The boat was comfortable, Ha was a fantastic guide and the chef did an amazing job.

--For parents, the lip of the boat is pretty low (maybe 12-18 inches in places), but our guide told us that no one has actually fallen out. The bed is one large bed, but can fit 4 (2 adults and 2 children).
--The cave hike/kayaking is fun and our kids enjoyed it (+ life jackets were provided for them). We also enjoyed the visit to the floating village (you see the school, pearl farm, etc.). Bring small bills to tip the person who rows you around the village + a small purchase is appreciated, according to our guide.
--The weather when we visited was fantastic . . . would be worth checking to see when rainy season is, as this could affect the quality of the trip.
--Food was amazing and tons of it, though much smaller meals the second day.
--I didn't see any mosquitoes while we were there (either in Hanoi or near the bay).
--Our children loved the boat trip and we felt very comfortable and safe during the trip.
--Our only complaint is the travel time! Our bus was an hour late to pick us up, and we had to wait for a while at the end (though they have a nice facility and the waiting wasn't too bad). Unfortunately, given Hanoi traffic, I would plan for about 4 hours there and the same time back. There is also the obligatory stop at an overpriced roadside souvenir shop, though no pressure to buy.

Overall, very good, professional operation!

My partner and I enjoyed a one night, two day cruise on the Red Dragon 1 recently. It was wonderful!
Halong Bay is absolutely stunning which made the four hour drive out there easy to forget.
The cabins were comfortable and clean, the crew and food were great and our tour guide, Sunny was really informative and lovely to chat with.
We really enjoyed the Kayaking and trip to the local fisherman's village.
If we ever get to Halong Bay again, we'll look at doing a longer cruise.
I would definitely recommend.

A fabulous trip to Halong bay enjoying the magic and majesty of the limestone formations in the relative peace of the northern parts of the bay. We did a 3day2night trip (one word as our guide kept saying), which we think is just about right amount of time. As it takes 4 hours to get there from Hanoi, 1 night really doesn’t give you much time in the bay. I wouldn’t even consider a day trip (with 8hrs in a minibus).

We were on the Prince III which was perfectly sized with 4 compact yet more than adequately sized berths. It has an indoor dining room, space to eat outside and lounging area. The food was delicious despite our worst fears. Water, tea and coffee were free for the whole trip. Other drinks were $2 for a beer and $6.50 for a cocktail. Wine was available by the bottle but prohibitively expensive (esp for the quality according to the our new wine buff friends).

We were lucky to meet 3 lovely couples and to have Ha as our guide. 6 members of crew looked after our every need. The itinerary included kayaking and swimming in the sea, a fabulous BBQ on the beach (at tables complete with tablecloth and napkins), a trip to a cave and a floating village. Great mix of enough to do and enough time to chill out.
