After the craziness in HCMC and Hanoi, the time spent on the water in Halong Bay was a much needed break. The views are amazing once away from shore and many other boats, ships. The rock islands and cave formations are amazing. the floating fishing villages are so interesting to see. To realize these families live such isolated lives, in very small floating houses with very little amenities was amazing. The quiet and stillness is therapeutic..

The Halong Bay is one of those few gems you'll see in your lifetime. The rising cliffs in the middle of the bay make you think twice about where you stand in life. They are massive and have been there for centuries, eroding over time, while the water soothes you no matter how hard the journey to get there (and I promise a bus ride through Vietnam is not the nicest trip ever). Far from the bustling of South Eastern Asian major cities, the Halong Bay is a safe haven where you won't hear much noise and can really relax.
I'm only afraid this will become a tourist trap soon due to the amount of boats that try to make money by guiding you through it. Be careful what you pay for and try to bargain some before hopping on a boat. Your hostel in Hanoi should be able to help you sort out the best options but be careful what you go for and do some research before you book a tour. Try to book the 3-day cruise.

This should be on people list to see in their lifetime. Get on a junk be pampered by the crew sail out into the bay sneaking between the islands, visit the stunning caves, climb Up to top of one of Tge islands for a fabulous view over many islands. Spend the night in the bay under the moon, cruise past the little fishing villages is just wonderful

We'd booked the 3 day / 2 night Paloma cruise in Halong Bay. The cruise ship was fine so were the cabins. Not comparable to Queen Mary 2 ;) but just what we expected. The sun deck is a favourite even in March when it was really foggy the whole three days. Guess we would have prefered sunshine but fog was cool in a way too. Gave you the impression of stepping into Pirates of the Carribean ... Being there in March it was far from high season and still we felt it was extremely crowded. Boats everywhere you look and heaps of tourists waiting to enter the Amazing caves, do kajaking or go on one of the bamboo boats. Wouldn't want to be here in high season even if it's sunnier then.
What we found really upsetting was the rubbish floating around everywhere. No way I would go swimming there! Having lived in New Zealand for five years where nature is very well looked after coming here was a real disappointment. From what we were told the majority of boats do not have sewage tanks so everything goes straight into the water. Imagine 900 boats in the bay with an average of maybe 40-50 people on each ... then you have an idea of what the water looks like :(.
Would rather go to NZ, Australia or Scandinavia than here again.

Natural wonders of the world like this special geography in Halong Bay is stunningly unique, beautiful and rare. We expected this from photos and tv.images but nothing quite prepares you for it when you're coasting in the waters so close to the geographically formations that you could almost touch them and breathe in the ocean air. Very sadly though, apart from the gorgeous views, sampans and floating villages of local fishing people, we saw far too many junk cruises and motor boats that polluted not only the scenery but in our minds, the thought of pollution in the pristine waters. We were told by our tour guide that during the peak season, there may be close to 600 vessels a day that crowd this area (from overnight ships to day tours). Somehow, there needs to be a balance between juggling the need for tourism dollars and how the country can preserve this "gift from nature" from eventual erosion.
