My husband and I spent 2 days mountain biking and 2 days on the Bike to Coast (Mui Ne) trip. We did Slingshot and Crazy 8 for the trail riding. We really enjoyed cycling and chatting with our guides Bon, Dom, Luis and Long as well as with our Bike to Coast driver Phuc.
The single track sections of the mountain bike trails were just as good if not much better than many trails I ride in Northern California and the scenery was stunning. I always wanted to bike through a large creek bed and we did so multiple times on Slingshot. Having lunch at a waterfall was pretty much a dream. The picnic lunch they pack is very delicious and incredibly fresh -- best bananas in the world I think. Crazy 8 was crazy challenging with windy downhill sections and intense climbs but we enjoyed every minute of the ride.
The Bike to Coast ride was not only a great way to get exercise and see the countryside of Viet Nam but also an opportunity to learn a bit about local culture. Our guide Long was very knowledgeable and friendly and shared a lot of info about the towns we biked through. All of us shared a lot of stories laughs over meals and while biking along the road.
For those that are curious about ability levels for the trail rides -- My husband and I have been mountain biking for 10+ years and Slingshot and Crazy 8 were plenty challenging for us. I would say if you are a beginner stick to the easier trail rides or the road rides. Feel free to discuss your ability with the Phat Tire team as I don't remember them ever asking my ability outright (maybe a practice they could adopt?? : D) but they are very knowledgeable and will help you pick the right ride for your level.
What a great company! The fact that they love their jobs really shows and makes for a top notch experience.
