We went there in the search of a bit of shade from the sun. That was a wrong assumption. There is no shade at Da Lat Botanical garden. Or almost none. It is quite amazing how you can plan a botanical garden, plant flowers, trees and whatnot and at the same time offer no real nice place to relax.

From that point of view, the garden is outright disappointing. The flowers are in bad shape, a lot of them need water urgently, and a bit of care even more.

There is one reason to go there however: Tucked away at the left side of the park is a small children's playground. It's a "Vietnamese" playground, mind you, so expect the slides to be plastic and the whole area a bit rundown, but nevertheless, the variety is quite nice. There's half a dozen small slides, there's a cage filled with balls, there are two different carrousels. For those, you need people to turn the switch, and they charge you 10.000 VND per ride, which is very cheap compared to Hanoi's big park, where you pay double for a ride that lasts not even half as long.

The facilities are nice for children 2-4 years old, but probably might bore anybody who is older. Ah, and also: There is shade around the playground. And butterflies.

Don't expect to go and see the rarest lily or the most exotic daffodil but they have done some fantastic things with the sheer number of flowers and colours. Sculpted dragons, dogs, stars, teapots and more are great for anyone needing to update sir Facebook profile. Try and time it so you go on a sunny day so the colours really pop. To be honest there are some major floors though, the big green houses are locked, the end of the park is a rancid swamp and there is a need for a bit more upkeep. Allow one hour to visit.

We visited the Flower park and really enjoyed the colorful displays of flowers. We were slightly disappointed as they appeared to be doing some work and none of the water fountains were working.

I must said I set my self up for disappointment on this one. I was imagining field of flowers like what I saw in Europe and the States. No where near that, it can't even come close to a public park. It's a very poor imitation of the gardens of Europe. I was told that the property was once belong to the university next door, but it was confiscated and turn into a private business.

We had some time to kill and decided to stop by. The flowers are fine but I'm no botanist and didn't really care to soak it up. It was a nice place to stroll and relax for a few minutes though. The price was less than $1 to get in so I can't complain too much.
