This restaurant (recommended in the Lonely Planet) looked really too posh for us backpackers and too expensive, but when you got in there the service was excellent and the food was good veitnamese food. The best thing about this good atmospheric place was the value becuase the excellent service and food you would assume more. We paid 131,000 dong for a beer, a large water and two large main meals. This is one a the best value for moneyplaces in Vietnam.

Having walked past the Art Cafe a few times we were unsure if it was opened or closed as the door is always closed and (unlike many/most other places) there is no menu or person out on the street trying to get you to come inside.
We opened the door and were the only people in the restaurant, which was fine, they put some music on and it lifted the atmosphere to match the setting, which is the owners artwork adorning the walls and bamboo finishes on the roof and walls, it is very nice.
For an entree we ordered garlic bread and 'snowballs', they were great, miced pork fried into a ball and covered with rice flakes - really worth a try if you like pork, we both thoroughly enjoyed them and the left over rice flakes on the plate!
For mains we had the beef rolls stuffed with cheese (which we had also ordered at a different restaurant the night previously), and whilst it was just slightly (very slight, about 70c) more expensive here at Art Cafe, it was of a higher quality. The rolls came in a fresh tomato sauce and with some fresh beans, brocolli and cauliflower. We also had the claypot pork, which whilst it didn't actually come out in the clay pot, was delicious.
Dessert was chocolate cake with coconut icecream and the icecream was so tasty we had seconds!
Art Cafe is a really warm and cozy place and the food that we had when we were there was excellent, I hope more people give it a try and aren't put off by the doors being closed, or the fact there are no touts trying to get you inside! In that way it is a nice change, you are just left to relax and eat and if you ask for service you will get it, however if you want to be left alone to relax it is a very chilled place for that.

The cafe itself is nice and cosy but all dishes we ordered were really disappointing. The tomato soup was freshly made but it had so much sugar in it that it tasted like a dessert. The mixed salad came with a homemade dressing but this one as well was very sugary, not like a salad dressing should taste! The crispy noodles were good but the chicken in it very tough and overcooked. And the steamed fish in coconut sauce had the same problem as the chicken had - it was overcooked and quite chewy. This is very unfortunate, as the cafe is a really nice place and the service lovely.

We had dinner here after hearing all of the reviews rave about the Art Cafe plus it is featured in the Lonely Planet guide book so we gave it a go as it seemed like a sure thing on our first night here. We were seated by a waitress who gave us menus and stared outside the doors like a bit of a zombie, we had to call her over to take our order.

We asked a question about what was in one of dishes and they didnt know which is a bit embarrassing for them the food arrived and it wasnt what was described on the menu and the rice was so overcooked it was like a ball of rock.

One of our drinks was missing an ingredient, and the waitstaff didnt pay any attention to us at all. We left feeling unsatified and disappointed at the whole experience.

The Art cafe has been around for seven years. Its genial owner is a gifted artist but a lousy snooker player.
I like restaurants that are spotlessly clean and are set with fine glassware and heavy silverware.
The menu is extensive and features many typical Vietnamese dishes that range in price between VND 40,000 - VND 60,000.
The servings are of elegant sufficiency (in other words you'll feel sated but far from bloated)and the wine list is passable. I would advise against trying the local Dalat wines as they apparently don't travel well. Beers are modestly priced.
Our party ordered the following: Roast chicken & veg, Sauted chicken with chilli & lemon grass, Chicken curry, Spring rolls and Banana & chocolate pancakes. All dishes were good to the bone. Service was attentive without being intrusive.
Even though prices may be just a tad above average, this place is well worth a visit and offers good value for money.
