The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary was marketed as a place for elephants that had been working to come and be at ease for the remainder of their lives. This was supposed to be a place were the elephants were rescued and treated with care. Unfortunately, it did not play out that way. These elephants are still used for show. They are ushered out of big metal stalls for the morning arrival. Handlers are with them all the time. They'll say its for their protection but don't buy it. The brochure says you'll walk the 30 acre grounds, not nearly!! You are kept to a very small area and hey, there is no tree top observation deck. Its a deck on the ground with a canopy. Oh yes, and the elephants are escorted back to their pens at the end of the morning and thus the only thing your observing are people eating a cold lunch. They will tell you the elephants go back to their pens for feeding and medicine. The medicines could be given with their feedings out in the fields were they are supposed to wander freely and exhibit natural elephant behaviors. We also had to witness an elephant being coaxed into a small water source by the handler, simply to please the guests. I was appalled! The plus is at least these elephants aren't giving rides or moving large logs any more. Outside of that there is nothing positive about this place.
