Let me just say this.. The reason why the front office staff (guest service agents, concierge, operators on down to the bellman at Laguna or where ever you're staying would recommend this place is because they get a 10% but from your bill. That's how it's done in Phuket, Samui, etc. Now, this is against hotel policy, but when you're working for peanuts you don't turn down easy money even when it's against your better judgement. How do I know this? I was a foreign trainee at Angsana Laguna which is another essay in itself. There! The trick of the trade. That is how most hotel guests ended up at this abominable place.
As for this restaurant, yes, it was bad when I went there in Jan of this year as well. My parents came to visit while I was training and I wish I hadn't dragged them there on their fiest night. Service was just abhorred. The staff made faces that I didn't know was possible. In fact, there was one bellman who actually read this site and was quite honest to our guests about this restaurant, and I should have listened to him.
My advice would be to drop the usual tourist's mindset and go get some street food. A lot of the street food I had tried was surprising delicious. If you're worrying about hygiene then try to imagine what Lotus kitchen must be like. Or you can always go to central and try the many restaurants there which were quite good. Even the food court at Tesco Lotus had quite decent food. There was a dish called hoytod which I absolutely loved.
