“Avoid Pattaya unless only looking for sex”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2010

I visited Pattaya with my wife and three kids as a short "stop over" as part of a vacation to Siem Reap in Cambodia. We'd been to Bangkok before, so we thought we'd try a different city in Thailand that was drivable, and with a beach. Big mistake....

If you are a 40+ guy with a bottle of Viagra and desire for 15-year-old girls, by all means this is a great place. But for anyone else, it is a complete dump, with a dirty beach as well.

I have been to many corners of Thailand, and it is a wonderful country! Even with my wife and three kids (6, 8, 10), I have never been put off by the sex tourism you see in Phuket, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, etc. However, you can avoid it and steer away from it if you have kids in those places. In Pattaya, it is in your face non-stop.

We ate at an international restaurant one night (in same building as Ripley's...can't remember its name) and we saw a Russian woman, maybe 24, who was clearly drugged, eating with a giant Russian muscleman and a much older woman. She looked like she was there against her will, and was probably being trafficked. My kids noticed her as well ..... that is not the kind of thing one wants to try and explain to your children.

After a horrible walk where we discovered what the true character of Pattaya is, we spent our four days within the confines of our hotel (Marriott .... nice pool).

Visit Thailand? YES!
Visit Pattaya? NO!!!!!!

“What once was my favourite place to be..”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2010

I will open my review by saying this..Pattaya can be very a liberating place..I first arrived in Pattaya in September of 2000..I have since returned on 9 different occasions..The last being in January 2010..Without getting into personal details I'd like to describe what is available in this fascinating little city..Everything..It's oceanside and offers very nice high temperatures in the day and very comfortable temperatures in the evening..Thai food of course is every where, but because of the many foreigners who have chosen to make Pattaya their home, there are a varied array of delicious international cuisines available ..And don't be fooled by a restaurants outward appearance.I have found many little treasures in what appeared to be a less than upscale place.Keep an open mind..I love Thai food and there is alot of great Thai food in Pattaya..I highly recommend The Kiss Cafe on Second Rd..They have everything and it's consistently great..The lil gyro carts are a must do and are great late night food.....The beach in Pattaya leaves alot to be desired..It gets very busy during the day with the sounds of power boats and jetskis..There are many vendors trying to sell their wares and it can get a lil annoying saying no thank you all day while trying to enjoy a relaxing time at the beach..However it is all part of the Pattaya experience.. Jomtien Beach is very close however is getting as hectic as Pattaya.. I think heading a lil ways out of town to a quiet lil place called Bangsalay would meet anybody's expectations..I must add though. I've never had a big problem with any beach,anywhere..That's a no brainer..Oh,be prepared to be on a beach with no bathrooms and whatever that might entail..Stay hydrated. ........Finding a place to stay in this city is not difficult..Prices range from 8 canadian dollars to whatever you care to pay..There are plenty of 20 to 40 dollar range hotels in Pattaya ..Just have a look around..Personally I suggest staying in South Pattaya ..It's close to everything,Walking Street and the beach..If you plan on staying awhile, and it happens, bargain with your hotel for a monthly rate..You can really reduce costs........Now,onto my observations of what happens "socially" in this city of self realization..There are a guzillion bars in Pattaya..From hole in the walls to outdoor beer bar complexes to air conditioned go go bars to discos...I prefer outdoor beer bars as I enjoy the great outdoors and happen to still engage in the filthy habit of smoking..Which by the way is still very prevalent in Pattaya..Beers bars are generally less expensive and as informal as you can get..Just a stool and a bar to rest your elbows on..Many have televisions and music..Usually the "hostesses" are very friendly and service is great..Pattaya is an amazing place for those who have an open mind and can simply accept everything they witness..The Thai people have many things to teach us if we are willing to learn......Prostitution is obviously at the forefront in this city but Pattaya is much more than that..It is a place that can liberate yourself from the deprivations of Western society..A place where giant smiles, laughter and good old fashioned fun are commonplace..It isn't a place for everybody to be sure..It appeals to the hedonistic aspect of who I am and i think everybody should at least experience it twice ..I've visited Pattaya on 10 different occasions in the last 10 years..Each visit was very different..I have spent from 5 days to 6 weeks vacationing there,at all times of the year..I do not recommend high season anywhere,Pattaya included..Too many bodies around..I know this review has been pretty general..I've had life altering experiences in Pattaya..These often basic people have allowed me into their country and have shown me a different way at looking at my own existence..And for that I owe Pattaya and Thailand a large debt of gratitude..Try Pattaya ..You'll love it..

“Great for the single man”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2010

This is the sex capital of the world ,fine for any aged guy, but for a European woman, never, watching pubescent girls with guys old enough to be thieir grandfathers is not really a holiday high
Many great places in Thailand but leave this one to the old and sad single guys
Swim in the sea at your peril

“Pattaya worth a trip to”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2010

Just returned from a great late holiday in Thailand (Pattaya for 8 nights Bangkok for 3)
we heard mixed fews about Pattaya and being our first trip and certainly not our last to Thailand was baffled where to go... heard about all the islands and a few reviews of Pattaya everything from really great to similar to Blackpool - well being new to it we decided to choose Pattaya as we wanted a mixture of relaxation, bars, restuarants and of course shopping - Well Pattaya has it all including the GO GO scene. Arriving after dark and slightly jet lagged we thought we would wait til the morning to explore and due to other people adding comments, trip advisor and details on the net we took our maps and headed out.. first views very clean soo many shops and too many men after one thing but adjusting as quickly to that as the weather whole opinons change. Pattaya offers everything yes like most of Thailand has alot of girls and of course boys and then their clientelle but dont be put off if the older generation are not phased by it why would we be !
Pattaya offers things for everyone you have the promanade along the beach - even though Jomiten is the best beach to go to short cab drive away, you have the bars, shops, restuarants and walking street.. but there is alot more to Pattaya go behind 2nd street and there are more hidden bars and restuarants. As a couple we felt unthreatened by the single life scene and had so much to do and never felt in the wrong area or wrong bar. Pattaya has it all for all ages and all kinds of people look past the single men and ladies hanging around and enjoy the Thai life. We recommend Henry J's in North Pattaya apart of the Amari complex great for food, cocktails and the band is amazing - plus they have happy hour twice a day. Gullivers also very good but try it all we did and didnt have a bad meal or day/night
Also go to Jomiten Beach and the Elephant village - well worth it x
