I went to Pattaya once before in 1990 but it has changed out of all recognition since then. Before I remember only the beach road which had a few hotels and a couple of sois which had some small buildings and a few half built ones. Now the place is a huge city of sleaze. There are skyscrapers going up everywhere and the small guest houses they use to have are gone. The beach is a mass of umbrellas and sunbeds but I only saw a few people swimming. The locals regard the water as too dirty and the only people I saw in it were westerners who obviously haven't yet discovered nicer beaches in Krabi or Samui. There are lots of local people offering coconuts to drink from, and massages. If you walk on the landward side of the beach road you will get accosted by numerous tailors trying to start up a conversation in order to interest you in buying a suit. I have never met anyone who has ever bought one as it would get crushed up in a suitcase or rucksack. Nobody ever wears suits in Thailand because it is far too hot , (usually about 34 degrees by day) but I am sure if you really want a suit then check out these guys. There is a cheap eating bazar between soi 6 and 7 where you can get a tasty Thai meal for about 50 baht, and there are lots of clothes stalls, bag and sunglasses vendors and open air bars. The beach is OK for some nice photos or a bit of sunbathing if that is your thing but I would not swim there due to the poluted water.
