Service was excellent. Waiter clamps when food comes out. Lobster a bit over cooked. Rice and salad good. Tiger shrimp was cooked right. 50-100USD per plate so very pricey. Eat on pier and it might be a bit smelly for normal people.

This is to my knowledge, the closest genuine local seafood restaurant to Pattaya and should not be confused with the tourist traps on walking street. This place is built out on a wooden platform at the beginning of the boat pier where the fish is landed. It is a little difficult to find if you don't know where it is, but nowadays there is a large hotel block slightly inland and up the hill from it, called "Z", or at least that is the only identifying mark. There are signs pointing to "Shell Tankay" once you are in Nakhlua Soi 12.

In true local style, you walk into the restaurant past the tanks that hold the fish, lobsters, shellfish and whatever is on offer that day. The decor is all wood and rustic. Thais come for the food and the view, not the decoration! Do not be put off by the surroundings. The food is superb, even if the neighbours leave something to be desired....

On this occasion, we had the slipper lobster ("gang") fried with garlic. We followed this with an excellent tomyam soup with large prawns and a steamed fish with soy sauce (pla nun si yu). Crab fried rice and some stir fried veggies and we were already full. Coming live straight out of the tanks into the kitchen, it doesn't get fresher than this! There are usually the "staple" white snapper and grouper, but I recommend checking the tanks for the odd special fish. On this occasion we had blue spotted grouper (pla goot salat) and on another occasion, I have had a smaller variety of grouper called "pla boo" (I have no idea what the English name for it is) but if you see either one of these, I recommend them steamed!

Price is quite reasonable, although if you opt for Phuket Lobster, then best ask first, as that does get expensive!

It was high tide when we were there, so the water was lapping at the deck supports. However, I have been there at low tide, when the mud flats are exposed stretching into the distance. Then the cockle shell collectors come out and wade around carrying their buckets. Either way, there is a great view out across the bay.

Most people choose beer or a soft drink to go with their seafood, but there is a limited wine list (just look in the cooler to see what is available). I find a Pinot Grigio goes very well with this sort of food. Theirs is about B900 a bottle, which is about right.

As with most places like this, it is not recommended to come too late. I prefer lunch, or a leisurely afternoon, but by about 9.30pm, they are already packing up.
