“'' A Jewel'' No 1”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2012

Being a local I have not recommended a restaurant in Jomtien/Pattaya. WHY ! because they become too popular and we can not get in. ( its happen before ). This was our ''local secret'' but now the 'cats out of the bag' sob sob and others have highlighted it.
We have been going to Maggs for over 10 years, this was when Tim and Maggs had it..I think Val and John took over about 6 years ago (but I could be wrong there). They moved to the new location ( approx. 150 yds up from their old place ). nearly 2 years ago.
This is twice as big, very clean and more up market. ( Posh we say, Ha ha ) You will get a good idea as soon as you see the 2 large statue's outside holding up the roof ( not really ). It has Air / Con inside and 4 tables outside for the smokers.
The food is excellent,English and Thai. With a good range of all popular dishes, all reasonable priced. Wine is expensive in Thailand, so their house wine per Carafe is very good value for money. Their Daily Menu, with a choice of starters, main meals and sweets is excellent value for money 395 Bahts.
Val and John work very hard, ( Val is the cook ) to ensure you have a good meal in pleasant surroundings (Their Kitchen is spotless ) John shops every day to get fresh veg etc. It is very rare there is a problem with a meal. If there is, a quiet word to the waiters and it will be soon changed. Service is good with ''Umm'' a unique character having worked there for over 10years. Its all tongue in check and the tourists love him. Val will come around a speak to each table if she has time from the kitchen.
Yes Jomtien has many ''Gays'' but no problems. it is still a family Place.
Now the ''High Season'' is here. ( Nov to March ). booking is essential 0811534733.It is only open in the evenings. As Jomtien/ Pattaya is a holiday destination, dress is clean, casual. ( no Vests ). Go and have a lovely evening out.

“before they moved it was much better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2012

I have been in this restaurant before, when it was situated some 100 meters away from the present place. Than it was much more cosy and pleasant, but also the quality of the food was much better. Now they have moved to a much larger more sophisticated place. The menu has been changed, much to my regret, as has the prices.

“It was ok”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2012

Its an ok place, frequented by the gay fraternity of pattaya, the food is ok, Prices are cheap so dont expect fine quality. what spoiled it for me was the male waiters are slightly over bearing and suggestive and a bit too close for my comfort. One of them suggested to my wife that I should go home with him and reassured her that he would take care of me it was embarrassing.
If you like flamboyant touchy feely waiters this will be up your street. I personally find it inappropriate.

“Maggs”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2012

This is probably one of the best eateries in town for both price, value and quantity on the plate.
Both John and Val are great in going out of their way to oblige customers and the rest of the staff always give a warm welcome The decor alone is staggering, for when they moved the previous owners were a company dealing in decorative plasterwork. You can spend as much time looking up as down to that plate of excellent food that has arrived in front of you. Although most of the food on the menu appears to be standard fare, what gives this place the edge is Val's innovative flair of combining foods on a lot of the dishes.
You have a choice of a three course set menu (very good selections) or off menu. One thing they do not do is cut the amounts on the set menu so you get a very ample meal.
I would rate this place as good as Mantra, Cafe Des Amis or Au Bon Coin without the hurt to the wallet. My Thai friends rate the Thai food highly as well.
