Tucked away in a really narrow sidestreet of Naklua Soi 18 in a one storey row house, is a small Austrian restaurant. Just about 6 tables on the porch, this is a classic family operation, which has been around for almost 30 years, previously in a more favoured location on the main soi close to Naklua Rd., until the rent there has been suddenly doubled. The owner is a very friendly, smiling low key Austrian gentleman, but it is really the thai wife who runs the place with iron discipline. German is spoken here and you will not see any tourists, there is a small town vibe around the place, a welcomed rarity in Pattaya. Just one table free, which was a good sign. There is a daily menu board on the wall, has probably been there for years, don’t expect it to change next week. Time has stopped here - also regarding the prices - long ago. As the Tuesday menu happened to be schnitzel including a vegetable soup, salad and coffee or ice cream at 230 Baht (!} we both ordered it - with modest expectations. Probably one of the longest waits followed I ever had in a resturant, but it was more than worth it. I will never understand why it took them about 45 minutes to bring out the soup, but when it arrived rich with potatoes, it was clear this was real home made food like at you grandma’s table. The authetic wiener schitzel was huge, the meat tender and juicy, the ‘bratkartoffel’ freshly out of a sizzling pan. Although very hungry, none of us could finish it, which kind of explains why the local family of neighborhood dogs - they are all related we were told - are having serious weight issues. Nice portion of crispy fresh salad with a traditional vinegar dressing. Even the ice cream was surprising quality, with some chocolat topping, all in all one of the best meals I had in Pattaya in months and at an incredible price. Big thumbs up and recommemdation, will be back to try more. Thai food also available and looked equally good.
Check bin: Menu 230,-, Chang 70,- Baht - out of this world value!

Zum Schnitzelwirt may be a bit hard to find since it is not located just on the main street but it is tucked away a bit. The place is actually the outdoor area of the home of the owner, so expect it to be not too big and being only outdoor there is no aircon.

It is run by an Austrian and his Thai wife. Both welcome you wholeheartedly and display a natural friendliness. You will soon feel at home.

The menu is as expected mainly German/Austrian specialities but it is not limited to that. The availability of some items may be restricted due to lack of demand outside the main season. But they serve a variety of Schnitzel which come in generous portions (go for the big version) and which are well prepared. The salad served is rather basic but overall one cannot complain for all this comes at a reasonable price and the Schnitzel alone is worth a visit.
