“Best Place to Party”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

If you are looking to party and have fun at night with friends, this is the beach up should opt for. As it had most of the famous clubs like Green Mango, Reggae, etc.

“Busy and lots to see and do”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

The beach is pretty clean and long enough for all visitors. Great for swimming, not too rocky and nice water. Lots of restaurants and bars in the area as well.

“Surprise surf”
Reviewed February 24, 2013 via mobile

I actually had a couple of fun surfs at this beach. The waves were small but ideal for the hire longboard I got from the beach. The water is warm and fairly shallow with sand bottom.

It has the potential to catch out those who don't usually swim at the beach if the wind or the waves came up but most Aussies should be ok.

Plenty to do if you don't want to get wet from sunning to jet skis to massages and bars. There are hawkers but they don't hassle at all and I recommend buying a pineapple or mango.

“Good to swim, but a little dirty.”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

It's a good swimming beach - especially when calm. And pretty enough. Just let down by the fact that there is often a fair amount of rubbish. Shame so many tourists can't be bothered to take their litter with them when they leave.

“Euro-tourism & engine oil pollution”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

It's a beach alright, with white sand and a blue sea. The beach is relatively clean but doesn't feel Asian at all despite being in Thailand, due to the 99% European visitors. And it's not the highest class of Europeans, judging from the total lack of respect for foreign culture which is displayed on the beach in all its literal nudity. If you have high moral values and don't want your young kids to come face-to-face with white sun-burned private parts, then be warned. I felt as if I were on any random lower class beach in the Mediterranean.

It's not overly crowded, but certainly not quiet or relaxed. Very annoying is the noise from power-boats and jet skis that starts quite early and continues until sunset. Not that you can enjoy sunset at Chaweng beach because the sun sets in the mountains behind. And the overload of motorized vehicles on the water causes another no-no: engine oil spills. I can throw a set of swimming gear away and had to clean off my 2-year old son scrubbing the hard way because of the inevitable encounter with engine oil when you go into the sea. Pretty bad, it's very sticky stuff that won't come off.

The sea is very shallow for quite a long way in so you can't really swim there. Due to the irregular coastline, the waves do break there though, so it's too rough for small kids to go in without hand-holding and keeping a close watch. There's quite an army of locals walking up and down all day trying to sell you stuff, but they're not very annoying.

Just behind the beach there's the typical tourist-trap roads lined with over-expensive "restaurants" selling bad food. Be careful crossing the road because it's swarmed by scooters with youths around 20-30, all European and shirtless and some not 100% sober. Everywhere along this road there's the constant smell of open sewer.

So, why still 3 stars? Well, I guess some will actually like this and if you like hanging on the beach for a lazy day and then go for a drink in a non-Asian setting, then this is for you.
