On the main road along Bophut before you get to the Big Buddha turn off (just before the Reggae Bar - see separate review) and opposite the always empty U2 you find Restaurant Kunying. It ain't much to look at and has wooden chairs and tables overlooking the road with a pool hall at the back so not blessed with great views but the food is excellent
Went on recommendation of a Thai friend and had a great meal and the pork ribs the best I have ever tasted. Was impressed by the fact that the main man (Tong) turned down my request for fish saying it was not fresh that day. The second time we went, he made the same comment when I asked about the crab. We asked if we could prebook for a few nights later and he could get our requests fresh from the market that day.
We had lobster, huge prawns, curried blue crab and fried snapper for 6. The food was great and the bill including wine and beers was about £120. We did not finish the final dish because of a very bad accident outside. Two Thai lads ploughed into a Dutch guy on his motorbike nether party wearing crash helmets. Dutch guy badly hurt with blood coming from the back of his head. The two lads disappeared and we stayed with the Dutchman until the ambulance arrived. Sorry to spoil this review with the story but it raises a very important point - if you MUST hire a motorbike PLEASE wear a helmet. It is interesting to note how few locals or pherangs (europeans) bother while in Bangkok where the speed restrictions reduce the risk, they are almost 100%. The lax enforcement may have something to do with occasional crackdowns by the Koh Samui police which result in 'on the spot fines'. How much of this ends up in the island's revenue is anyone's guess.
Still I would recommend this restaurant as basic but great value.
