“Best guest house I've ever seen”
Reviewed August 4, 2014 via mobile

Let's get the minor negative (location) out of the way first. Ruen come in is located on the outskirts of the city down a dusty road which requires a taxi ride to and from the city centre but the negatives stop there!

This place is INCREDIBLE!!! You are treat like a king when you stay here. The staff are so attentive and polite and are always there for you without ever feeling like they are over bearing which is a very hard thing to do.

The building itself is sensational. The smell from the wood when you enter makes you think WOW and the look, character, atmosphere it creates is something else. The gardens are beautiful with amazingly stocked koi ponds. The small pool/jacuzzi area is more than enough for the size of the place and is very well kept.

The food is SENSATIONAL at any time of the day - breakfast/lunch/dinner.

The main reason this place is as good as it is is really down to one person - Mai the owner. She is so proud of her business/country/culture and it emanates in everything at this place. We booked onto the Thai cooking course (something I've always wanted to do) and it was amazing. Mai whisked us off to the local market where she was known by all the stall owners. We had a fascinating time choosing all of the ingredients before heading back to the hotel and cooking it all in the outdoor kitchen that her staff arrange for you. We swopped and made cocktails as we cooked and made and ate some amazing dishes.

I cannot rave about this place enough if you are going to visit Chiang Mai and want a fabulous experience you just have to stay here!!!

We stayed here for two nights, but wish it had been longer.
They responded to emails promptly before we arrived, arranged our airport pickup, and from the moment we arrived treated us like their best friends.
Upon checking in, we met Kate and were given drinks, taken through a map of the area, told likely prices for getting around and informed about local areas of interest, she even gave us some local fruits that grew in the hotel, and sent a bowl to the room.
The hotel itself is extremely impressive, completely made from teak and in impeccable condition, the room was massive with a spa bathtub, and good aircon.
Kate also arranged their own driver/tour guide to take us to Tiger Kingdom, I imagine for about the same price as a taxi would've been, but he was a very knowledgable and friendly guy, a pleasure to be in the company of.
It is slightly outside town but a ten minute walk to where you can get a 5 min ride in for about 20bht each. Getting back is more difficult, not many drivers know where it is and we paid anywhere from 100-200bht over our three days.
Despite this, we'd go back, all the staff we met were extremely friendly and helpful, waving us in and out as we came and went. The chiang mai breakfast option is also something to try out!

We stayed in the Ruen Come In during our honeymoon in July 2013 (not in August - but I could not select July 2013 any more when writing this review) and we would absolutely recommend it...

Very, very nice small boutique Hotel with only five rooms in a Lanna style Teak wood house.
The rooms are very clean with good air condition, a nice and clean bathroom, a small safe and of course (almost) everything is made of Teak.

The old city is only a few minutes away (brave people can walk, you can also use the bikes that the Ruen Come In offers to their guests).

The Ruen Come In also has a small restaurant (not many walk-in guests) and we had dinner there once - reasonable pricing and the food was very good.

The american style breakfast is good, coffee could be slightly better (like anywhere in Thailand... that is especially true if you usually like Espresso Doppio).

The staff is very, very friendly and helpfull.

A laundry service is a few minutes down the street (and how they folded my sneaker socks is just amazing) and if you walk a little further you will reach all kinds of small Shops, 7Eleven, drug store and the like.

We will most likely come back when visitin Chiang Mai again.

Room Tip: We had the "Rosewood Deluxe" room... perfect!

We stayed here from July 10 to July 14. First of all, this hotel was very beautiful, with everything made of wood, and it was impeccably clean, always the most important thing to me about any hotel anywhere. The staff was lovely and attentive. On our last night in the hotel, we had a problem with our room at 11:30 at night and the staff immediately gave us another nearby room to sleep in for the rest of the night. The pool was small but clean and a great place to cool off at the end of a long hot day. The hotel is small and the feel is warm and intimate. The only drawback is that the hotel is far from the center of town and none of the tuk tuk drivers know where it is.

Reviewed July 12, 2014

I stayed at the Ruen Come In from July 2nd to July 6th. It was the second stop in a three stop trip to Thailand and I must say, it was a wonderful stop. The hotel itself is slightly outside of the walled-in city of Chiang Mai, but it was the relaxing and quiet stay that we needed after staying a few days in Bangkok.

First, the hotel itself is beautiful. I had read a few reviews of it being like a B&B which actually scared me. B&B's seem to be way to intimate for my taste, and I thought the Ruen would be the same. To my surprise, it wasn't. Don't get me wrong, the staff was everything you need them to be. They were attentive, helpful, and managed to make themselves available right when you needed them, but they weren't in your way, and made sure to give you your space. The room was spacious (I was in RW1) and clean. It was private, and just what we needed after a day of exploration. You do need to remove your shoes before walking on indoors, or on any of the wood flooring leading to your room.

We had a choice of breakfast options, which they wanted you to select (the breakfast and the time) the day before so it was ready when you were. On our last morning we were an hour and a half late to breakfast. They told us it was no issue, and that they'd be there when we were ready (up until 12 noon). They had a selection of Thai breakfast dishes and a traditional western breakfast (which we did not try). Each came with fruit, and juice as well as water. We only had dinner there one night, and it was good. Nothing stands out about it, but it was good.

We took advantage of the bikes the hotel allowed us to use, for free. This is a MUST. It was a great way to explore the city. The only thing I must warn is that the flow of traffic in the area is heavy and a seemingly chaotic, so be careful. But the drivers there are much more courteous than any other city I've been to, so you should be okay.

I must give a special shout out to the two young ladies who were so helpful here. Kate and the other girl (I feel so bad that I can't remember her name...Yun, or something like that) were so nice, and helpful. They made the stay so pleasant by providing any assistance we needed. Kate also showed us some fruit that is grown on the property that we could eat and Yun (?) made sure our breakfast was delicious, and our bikes were maintained. We only met the owner once, but she was also extremely friendly and helpful. She gave us some assistance on where to go and what to see, and showed us a few tours (though we didn't take any of her suggestions).

There are two things that you should know:

1. The hotel being slightly outside of the city will be an issue for the tuk-tuk's and red vans. We had to walk to Huay Kaew Road, from the hotel, to get a good price from a red van. It's not a bad walk, but will take about 15 minutes. As others have said, they will try to charge you a premium to get back to the hotel at night. We had to be tough negotiators, and let a few of them go before we found one willing to go with our rate. I can't complain about this because from reading the reviews, I already knew this and was prepared. My suggestion, when heading home, is to ask them to drop you off at Wat Jed Yod. It's slightly cheaper and most of them know where it is. I go this advice from another poster, and I highly recommend it. It's a five minute walk back to the hotel from there. You can also ask the hotel to drop you off when heading into town. We didn't use this service, but I believe it will cost about 200 baht.

2. In RW 1, the air conditioner blows right onto the bed. This makes it extremely cold at night, so unless you like it like that, get under the covers, or turn it down. It gets hot there this time of year, so turning it down wasn't much of an option for us.

Overall, this was a fantastic stay, and I'd recommend it to anyone considering staying in Chiang Mai.

After reading all the previous reports we were very excited about this hotel and booked for 7 nights. We were disappointed to find scaffold erected everywhere so painting could be done we had scaffold between our sunbeds and the pool bit of a tenko moment. The staff were all very nice but the service was not a patch on previous hotels on this trip but was twice the price. The location is a absolute nightmare the taxi and tuk tuk drivers really struggle to find it especially at night. The room was lovely and very comfortable. I really fail to see how people give this a 5 star it's just an ok place.

We stayed at the Deluxe Room for 2 nights and it was a pleasant experience. There are 5 rooms only and the whole resort is made of wood in traditional Lanna style, which made it quite interesting to try out. Breakfast is quite nice with several types to choose from each day. Staff were nice and helpful, and the only setback is the location - difficult to find and a bit far to walk to old city (possible but not easy). We had our own car and so the overall experience was quite pleasant.
