“Second visit to Chiang Mai - A pleasant stay”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

We last visited Chiang Mai 5 years ago and that time stayed in a hotel in the old city. As we booked this holiday very late, we were happy to find that Kantary Hills had availability. I hadn't done much research prior to our trip and thought we had paid for a room with breakfast, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that we had a one-bedroomed serviced apartment, to include lounge and kitchen /dining area. This was well equipped and had the added bonus of a washing machine and a fridge/freezer, which was a welcome replacement to the usual 'mini-bar'! There was an ironing room on the 3rd floor which was also useful.

The whole apartment was spacious with modern, simple furniture, though could be described as functional rather than stylish in design. Bed linen and towels were changed daily, which we appreciated because I wasn't very well during our stay. The bathroom was impressive, again very simply set out, but it was very spacious and had a constant supply of very hot water. The only minor criticism would be the size of the balcony which was very small. We had a room facing the back and didn't have a very attractive view, so we might not have chosen to sit out very often. We were away from the main hustle and bustle of the main street nearby and didn't experience any noise problems from local bars or entertainment.

Unlike some previous reports, we found the staff at Kantary Hills to be very welcoming and though most guests were Chinese or Asian, we didn't have many difficulties communicating as most staff spoke some English.

The facilities at the hotel are quite acceptable. We used the pool area which was a regular shape and good for exercise. The gym, sauna and steam rooms looked very good, but we didn't use these facilities. We enjoyed using the residents lounge which had all day access and complimentary refreshments.

We ate at the hotel on a couple of occasions and the menu serves both Thai and International food. The prices we thought were very reasonable for a 4* hotel. Breakfast was good and likewise catered for a variety of tastes, but the bakery items, particularly the English scones were very good!

Overall we enjoyed our stay and would return as we thought the hotel provided excellent value. One thing though that might concern others is the location. It is only a 10 minute taxi ride from the airport and this meant that the flight path crossed the hotel. This didn't bother us because Chiang Mai is nothing like London's Heathrow and the earliest we heard flights was at 7:30am and the latest around 9:20pm. The hotel runs a free shuttle service to the airport which could be useful for some people. As we had previously visited Chiang Mai, we easily orientated ourselves with the old city. It is approximately 40min walk to the old city walls, be we would recommend using the Song Thaews (red taxis) to travel.

After staying at Bangkok's Cape House, a sister hotel chain of Kantary Hills, I had high expectations of KH but my experience with it is a bit of a letdown (room 1427; check-in on August 13th).

Service: We arrived after 3:00 PM and had to wait for more than 20 minutes to check in. The front desk could have been more helpful if the staff wasn't so busy answering the phone. Having said this, I have to compliment KH's flawless concierge services.

Room: Our en suite two bedrooms were spacious, but the decor was rather bland for a vacation. The interior design had a somewhat modern "zen" feel that wasn't very inviting.

Food: Breakfast was a disaster. It was clear the array of breakfast buffet was meant to accommodate both Asian and Western taste buds, but unfortunately very few items were tasty.... overcooked veggies and coffee/miso soup that tasted like flavored water, just to name a few. Food presentation and the setup of food stations gave a dismal vibe. Also, the selection of refreshments at the Executive Lounge was very limited.

KH should be good for business purposes, but it may not be the best choice for a vacation.

We stayed at Kantary for a brief visit to Chiang Mai and the hotel was very good overall. The staff are excellent: friendly and helpful. The hotel is a little off the beaten track but using the red taxis is a cheap and easy way to get around. We did one tuk tuk journey and that was enough unless you are feeling adventurous! The room, a deluxe, was a good size but quite dark and a little damp which we did mention to the staff. The breakfast was very good with a wide selection of Thai and other foods. We ate at the restaurant one evening and the food was excellent and accompanied by a talented guitarist. We would recommend this hotel for couples who want to explore the city. The night market is good fun and the city quite a nice place to spend an afternoon.

The hotel is really nice and clean. Everything you want as a tourist.
Breakfast is excellent, nothing bad to say about it.

The BIG problem is the staff, really not nice.
You ask for something in the lobby and no one smiles!!!
no courtesy!

The other thing I DONT UNDERSTAND is why the bigger and better the hotel, the worst the internet service they give.

They charge you for wifi in room. (20 usd per day.... for one device!!!!!)
The only choice they gave you was to use the lobby wifi.

I traveled through Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand, and every hotel had free wifi in rooms.
If you are paying a reasonable price, for me, wifi in room is a MUST.

The Kantary Hills, Chiang Mai, appreciates the time you have taken to provide feedback on your recent stay with us in which we have shared with our management team. We would also like to apologise for failing to meet your expectations in certain areas.

Our lobby staff have been briefed and training has been carried out to ensure that our guests are always welcomed with a smile which is what our guests here at the Kantary Hills Chiang Mai have become accustomed too.

To clarify, we offer free WiFi in all public areas of the hotel including the lobby, executive lounge, restaurant, bar, fitness centre and swimming pool. Our charge for in room connection is 150 Baht per day (approximately US$ 5) and our weekly in room WiFi package is 642 Baht (approximately US$ 20).

We would like to thank you for your positive comments and we are very pleased to know that you think our hotel has “Everything you want as a tourist”. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.

As a regular traveller I must say the experience here has been somewhat shocking.

The rooms are nice and the location is great - the gym and pool facilities are also lovely, but the service training really lets this place down.

On check-in we had a really bizarre experience with both staff multi-tasking and barely giving us any attention. She answered 3 phone calls in the midst of attending to us, changed money for someone and was speaking to her colleague on matters clearly unrelated to us. And she told us we had to wait for a room - even though we were checking in at 430pm. On further probing, her male colleague said okay a room is now available.

In the evening we asked for a pair of toothbrush/toothpaste + shower cap which is a standard for any hotel of this pedigree. The series of events was really interesting. First, the guy from housekeeping said "ok" then asked the receptionist to call us back to clarify. They asked us to check in our kitchen cabinets - which no high quality hotel wld ever ask of their guests - but we did. Obviously the toiletries were not there, so we said so. To which the staff asked "Are you sure?". Then the housekeeping attendant arrives with shower caps but no toothbrush or toothpaste. He says the hotel does not provide this.

We call reception again and he says "we are a serviced apartment not a hotel, so we do not provide toothbrush". I strongly urge kantary hills hotel and services apartment to change its name then. This is a BASIC amenity for any decent hotel.

The final straw was when another staff showed up with some toothpicks as an alternative. I couldn't help but laugh in despair before closing the door.

Service is very good and the hotel has a good reputation. I recommend using travel hub for any excursions they have been excellent nothing is too much trouble and it is excellent value for money. A great place to base yourself for seeing the wonderful area of Chiang Mai.

The hotel is set back from the main busy streets of chiang mai and had a nice quiet feel. There wrre lots of coffee shops and bars close by but not many restaurants. We had a great room with a washing machine which useful. Staff helpful and restaurant service good (breakfast coffee terrible!) There is also nice attached shop/cafe with smazing honey cake - try it!
There was a bit of plane noise at the pool. Maybe this hotel is good for a business trip or short vacation but not long holiday.
