We setup our cooking class through our hotel. The class was so fun and very educational. Dang was the chef teaching us.
We cooked papaya salad, Tom ka kai (coconut milk soup),Cashew nut chicken, Pad thai, Masaman curry, Panang Curry, and Mango sticky rice.
Dang took us to the market to show us the ingredients to buy. She went at a slow pace so we would understand and let us do everything ourselves.
They were very accommodating. We were able to make vegetarian options and reduce the spicy level for us. The food came out delicious. They also have a cook book for you to take home to recreate the dishes when you leave.
We booked this through our hostel at a discounted price of 750 baht for the evening course. You get taken around a local market first to see the ingredients you'll be using. Then you choose one from four categories of starter, a soup, a stir fry and a curry, 4 choices in each category and everyone cooks their own choice. I did a papaya salad, a spicy coconut shrimp soup, pad thai and chiang mai noodles, all delicious. My boyfriend cooked massaman curry and fried rice which were also amazing. You get a recipe book at the end with all the recipes in it too, great half a day!
We had a great morning cooking class at the Chang Cooking School. The instructors were all so nice and informative. Even got serenaded by the older gentleman and it was so fun. There were only 4 of us in the lesson which was wonderful, it was almost like a private class! Would definitely recommend.
If you want to receive La Cordon Bleu's type of training in Thai cuisine, this cooking school is not meant for you.
This is a great place to, in the process of preparing the raw material and putting them together, appreciate the thoughts behind Thai food, to improve your relationship with your loved ones, and to connect with the people of Chiang Mai at close quarters.
We were picked up at our hotel punctually. The learning journey began with a trip to the local market to look at the stuffs that make the raw material of the food that we were to cook. We were given time to walk the market to get the spices and seeds for our own use. The School provides all the ingredients for the dishes we were to create.
After showing us the washroom (they were very strict with cleanliness), the lockers for our bags, and giving us the aprons, chopping blocks and choppers, we began preparing the raw material for the 4 dishes.
Instructions were given clearly and modularly, and additional support was given by additional training staff. We eat what we cook, and questions on preparations, cooking processes, and things to look out for were answered.
The biggest surprise was the live music which was provided by the instructor, Uncle Deang, who was also the driver who picked us up at the hotel.
Do wear pants in June as this is Chiang Mai's rainy season and there are mosquitos. I was bitten a couple of times because I was in Bermudas, but what impressed me was that the staffs were observant and I was given a kind of powder to stop the itch, and fan was used to blow the insects away.
I like the atmosphere of this place.
It's a really good place to enjoy cooking and to learn how ! People are really nice, food really good and it's the less expensive I found. It's was a really great experience, thank you :)
They are so so very nice, the food is awesome.
They made me and my bestfriend feel like we were family. We didn't know what we were going to do today. So we asked around, for a cooking school that wasn't full or to many tourists. So this is a great place and they are cheap and fun.
Thank you so much for a awesome afternoon.
