Great Location, Friendly Staff

Review of Banthai Village
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 18, 2013
Banthai Village is in a great location, and the staff friendly. The lobby area is very nicely furnished and has complimentary computers for guests. There is a separate area with additional computers, seating to relax and books/videos to borrow, though most were not in English. The room was nice, though small with an extra bed added. I didn't care for the walk down in shower.

Location was fabulous. The night market was within walking distance as was the old city, the Sunday Walking Market, a plethora of restaurants, stores and massage places. Also, places to have laundry done. It is near an older temple which was very interesting and beautiful.

Staff were always professional and friendly. They took that extra step on our last day. Somehow, staff knew it was my daughters birthday. After we arrived back from dinner, there was a knock on the door. It was a wonderful surprise to find two staff with a birthday cake with her name written on it. They went out of their way to purchase a cake for her, which was very special and much appreciated.

The only negative was that the pool water was quite chilly and we had some very noisy neighbors. Hotel staff did inform the neighbors to be quiet. The room rate was a little higher than others in the area, however, the quality of the staff and property compensated for it.

I loved this hotel. It was in a great location, easy walking distance to the night market and the old town to see the wide variety of wats, the sunday night market and sights.

The staff are lovely, very friendly and helpful. The hotel had a lovely atmosphere about it.

The room was sweet with different finishing touches. There is a big glass sliding door with a curtain that separates the bathroom from the room. The bathroom has a step down bath and shower.
We had a small sitting area out the front of our room.

There are computers for use in the lobby. Wi-fi worked well in the rooms.

We didn't use the pool, but there were a low number of chairs around it. Also breakfast and the restaurant are right next to the pool. There was a second, much smaller pool outside our room (which is in a seperate building)

The only complaint was when I asked for a taxi to take us to our next hotel (as they were full, so we had to find another hotel) they said 150 baht. As it was only a few blocks away (and from the airport to the hotel we paid 93 baht) I thought this was high. They said if I didn't like the price then I am best to find one myself then. Which I did, but it meant walking to the end of the soi to hail one.

We found this in general with hotels in Chiang Mai, if they called one for you it was a fixed price. If you found a taxi yourself they used the meter (or charged a fixed lower price).

This place is great. My wife and I have stayed at it twice. It has a very nice location, the main entrance is just down a soi from a pretty large temple area that is one of the nicer temples arounds. Its about a 10 minute to the night bazaar as well. The staff is great and helpful. The rooms are really nice and have a comfortable bed, good AC and nice bathrooms. A sliding glass door separates the bathroom from the rest of the room. The bathrooms have tubs that a quite deep, deep enough to sit on a stop and still be mostly in water. The pool is very comfortable/nice but only has 5 chairs for laying out. The restaurant/bar is very good but a bit on the pricey side. To our surprise we did get a free beer after buying 3 though. I'm not sure if that is a daily special. If all the chairs are taken, sitting in the pool with a drink is quite pleasant as well. My only major complaint is that there is a very small in room safe. Definitely not large enough for a laptop.

Walking distance from both the old town and the night bazaar, BanThai Village is very well located for exploring on foot. The rooms were large enough and clean. The staff were very helpful and friendly (and the receptionist spoke excellent English!) The buffet breakfast by the pool was very enjoyable. A few downsides: not enough deck chairs by the pool (only 8 for 23 rooms) / the bathrooms could do with a few improvements (e.g. walk-in instead of 'walk-down' shower) / a bit noisy during the night. But all in all, we had a great experience staying at this hotel.

We are 2 couples who stayed in Banthai village for 7 nights.
We chose the hotel after reading reviews on Trip Advisor, and it was perfect for us.
The rooms are not huge, but very clean and well looked after.
The setting was lovely.....traditional Lanna Thai style, but with Western amenities. It had character, lovely orchids adorned the hotel, giving a peaceful aura.
The staff were lovely, and always spoke when we passed them.
Located between the main city and Night Bazzar, it was perfect for seeing the sights of Chiang Mai.
The pool was lovely and refreshing, but not many loungers. A new poolside bar was being built during our stay.
The only negative was the cost of a transfer to the airport.....a taxi costs 130Baht, but they charged us 400Baht....when we asked for a taxi number...they said they didn't have any taxi numbers!!
Despite this, we would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Chiang Mai.

After an uncomfortable stay in Bangkok, this hotel was just lovely. We had a large room with a daybed for our 19 year old daughter. She's very short so it was an ok size, a tall teenager wouldn't have been comfortable. We were sick with throat viruses & exhausted when we arrived on Christmas Day so were really looking forward to unwinding and relaxing. Just as we lay down for a late afternoon rest, very loud Christmas Carols began playing in the area outside our room. We'd pretty much had a gutful of 'Frosty the Snowman' after several weeks in SE Asia so I requested the music be turned down in our section which was across a small laneway. They seemed perplexed but carried out my request. Other guests nearby spoke to me and thanked me for arranging the decrease in volume. The room was spacious and very clean. Little shower pressure but we'd adjusted to that after a few weeks in SE Asia. Lovely big bath though. Laundry very expensive but just outside in the laneway it was very cheap to have laundry done and we were happy with the result. It's a little disconcerting to walk up the laneway later to see your undies drying on a line but we just shrugged and kept walking. We were disappointed with the service on the reception. Our tour was very late to pick us up but the staff wanted 30 baht to phone him to see if there was a problem. Another day we were quoted 1200 baht for a tour in a taxi, but later it was 1000 baht. The taxi did not come and we waited nearly an hour and a half in the lobby. When we asked for our money back and went out into the street we found the taxi that had been called for us. They'd only been called 15 mins prior, and the driver speculated that their regular driver was unavailable. We'd been told the wait was because the Prince and Princess had arrived and there was a traffic jam. This was not true. The taxi took us on our tour for 600 baht. These experiences leave a bad feeling, especially as people on the street in Chiang Mai had been extremely helpful. This took a little getting used to after many people attempted to scam us in Bangkok. All in all a good stay - we appreciated the comfort & cleanliness of the room.
