An oasis in a big city

Review of Banthai Village
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Oct 20, 2012
The hotel - this is a small boutique hotel but what a delightful place this is - it could only be described as an oasis in a large city. Staff are extremely helpful and always smiling and willing. The pool is so refreshing and is kept well maintained by the staff there - towels are always available also.
The location - it is out of the hustle and bustle area of the big city hotels, however only about a 10 minute walk to either the old city areas, or the night market areas - not difficult at all.
The room - we had a room right outside the pool area - literally 4 steps to the pool itself, so we were certainly spoilt. Room was large - containing a daybed (which was used to put our cases on as nowhere else to put them), king bed, one chair, desk, cabinet which contained a frig and tv, one bedside table and one large lamp with small table connected, Cupboard for hanging clothes and a safe. Outside of the door on the "balcony" area - two chairs and a coffee table overlooking the pool.
Bathroom was a rather large, however somewhat dated - no idea what the bath is for (bit strange and extremely "chunky" - However everything worked and everything was always spotlessly clean. The shower was a "rain shower" which was delightful - and there was always hot water no matter what time of day you showered.
Breakfast - not a lot of choice set up on the buffet table, however it is quite adequate (few choices of cereals, juices, toast, jams, pastries etc and some hot Asian dishes, as well as a few choices of fresh fruit - however they will make up for you whatever you want - ie any choice of eggs, bacon, etc. No complaints about the quality and taste of the food at all. The breakfast location is set beside the pool area and is a lovely area which tropical plants all around.
General - there is a laundry right outside the door of the hotel - very cheap - 50B for 1 kilo - washed and ironed, around 30B for 1 kilo washed only - and they do it the same day for you.
Late afternoon a young lady comes into the garden area and plays some soft Thai music which is a nice touch. The hotel is being expanded, and it looks like it has almost finished being built when we were there. This will probably more than double the amount of rooms available. The hotel "village" atmosphere - it is not just one big building, but a number of buildings connected with tropical plants/gardens and is so relaxing and quiet.
Negatives - it is probably only nit-picking if I had to find something to complain about, is the lack of a couple of comfortable chairs in the room itself. I did walk past one of the rooms and it appeared there were a couple in there, so perhaps it was just the room we had.
Overall - well and truly worth a stay here - will certainly go back if I am every in Chiang Mai again (which is likely). It is an affordable value for money hotel and should certainly be considered if you don't want the hustle and bustle of traffic/people etc of the big hotels. I certainly wish I could be transported back there now - it is so peaceful and was a delightful place to stay.

It's a shame when you have such a lovely boutique hotel, hidden away in a quite small enclave whilst being in the center Mai with wonderful rooms but poor staff.

Pretty much everything Chiang Mai has to offer is a short tuktuk ride away, the rooms are large, well decorated with comfortable beds. The pool area has a wonderful pool, although slightly small, considering the amount of rooms they have, it's large enough. There's also a nice little bar next to the pool along with a bunch of loungers. Most of the rooms overlook the pool which is a lovely touch.

The only thing, and in my opinion perhaps the most important thing is the service. It's almost non-existent. The reception staff never greet you as you walk by, rarely do any of the staff give you a smile (there are some exceptions of course, the male staff were generally friendlier). The straw that broke the camels back for me service-wise was when I asked the reception staff if I could use their phone to book an excursion and they told me they would have to charge me. I'm guessing if I had of booked one of the excursions through them, it wouldn't have been a problem, but since it was one I had found myself, they were not too happy.

I've never had reception staff at any hotel ever tell me I would have to pay to make a quick call, it just seems to be part of decent service.

Aside from the service, this is a really lovely hotel.

Room tip: Ask for a room in the main section of the hotel that overlooks the pool

This hotel was like staying on a yoga retreat in the middle of Chiang Mai. Rooms are very cute, food at the restaurant is great, staff was friendly for the most part and it's a very short walk to the night bazaar. Wish I could transport myself back there right now! Definitely would recommend to friends visiting Chiang Mai.

Good locate between the riverside and oldtown, near the nightmarket. spacious room, (weird bathroom with a soak tub but kind of funny) nice breakfast with fresh products. Friendly staff, nice sized pool, live music and a nice fact is that you can borrow dvd's if you like to.

Despite the good position, the kind and nice staff, it's quite impossible to think that this is a 4 star hotel!
Actually the worse part of the accomodation is the bathroom: it smells badly, towels are worn and old like taps of the "shower" (if it's possible to call it shower)!
There is free internet and wi fi but it didn't work in our room!
