Ugh. What have they done to this place?

Review of Bon Ca Va
1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jun 22, 2012
The Queen Victoria Inn and Bar and Restaurant and whatever else just changed hands again.

And this time, it's gone very Thai. Whereas up until two days ago, it was a nice place for a quiet beer and free WiFi and a bit of chat with the staff, now it's become a "live music" venue- beginning at about 3 in the afternoon. Gee, I hope you really enjoy horribly-sung Thai love songs all afternoon. If you've made the very ill-informed decision to stay here, it won't be quiet. It won't be peaceful and it probably won't be "friendly" because all the English-speaking staff quit. So now you can "chat" with the oily, weasely guy who hits on every women who comes the place. If I were a woman I'd not be happy trying to eat with some oily jerk inviting himself to sit down at my table and talk about taking me to the Walking Market...

jJust so, so negative. Avoid.

We are a couple in our 60's and just spent 5 nights at the Queen Victoria Inn at the recommendation of a friend. We enjoy the ambience of small guest houses and the QV did not disappoint. It felt like home. The room, though basic, was comfortable and clean, the staff were friendly, and the food served in their bar/restaurant was excellent. Both food and room were very reasonably priced. If we ever return to Chiang Mai, we would stay here again without hesitation.

Good Location in the old City. The food, both Thai and western, was 1st class and very reasonably priced. I had read about the mozzie problem, so left the fan on. Wasn't bitten once.
I was going to make some morning coffee, until I saw the kettle had moldy water. So much for that.

Rooms very clean and facilites are good and all work well. The price is reasonable and I like the old town so location good. The problems include mosquito's, very rude staff and noisy aircon. All in all I'm torn 50/50 on this place.

The Queen Victoria is located inside the city walls and only a 10 minute walk to Tha Phae gate where all the restaurants and bars are located. However, no taxi drivers knew where it was or how to get there so make sure you have the manager write down directions in Thai. The manager and staff were amazing. They were all very friendly and helpful and satisfied all of our requests quickly. The restaurant downstairs had great food and a huge, delicious breakfast. There was also a nice bar area and a pool table. The free in-room wifi was very good. The room was pretty spacious and clean and the TV had a good selection of channels. The bathroom was very big and although the a/c was good, it did take quite a while for the room to actually cool off. The value was pretty good although it would have been nice if breakfast was included and you could probably find a comparable room for less outside the city walls. The only major problem of this hotel was the fact that we constantly had multiple mosquitoes in our room. We have traveled in Thailand for several months and understand that there are mosquitoes everywhere but we have never had this many mosquitoes in our room before- even when staying in bungalows in the jungle. There was always a swarm outside the door to the hallway and even after we would kill all the mosquitoes in the room and not open the door, more somehow found a way in. The management needs to deal with this issue because we constantly were running around the room trying to kill the mosquitoes before they bit us. Overall, we recommend the Queen Victoria but make sure to bring lots of bug spray and fly swatters.
