“A treat!!”
Reviewed January 1, 2008

I have a hard time believing the other 2 reviews of B.M.P. I'm glad we didn't read them until we locked on with the guesthouse. We had a great experience! The staff was great and friendly. The room was large, clean and quite. we had hot water and air/con, and although we were there the week before Christmas I never heard anyone else making too much noise. The place is very pretty with flowers, nice pool, nice outdoor bar/restaurant where the food was hot, quick, and tasty. We rented a scooter for a few days and travelled all around the region. No problem getting around or seeing all of the "hot spots" either. It depends on what you're looking for... the price was right- you're not going to get a 5 star hotel for $15/night. It was clean, safe, and friendly and we would definately stay again.

BMP is a shining example of why you should consult the travel books and TripAdvisor, and NOT trust Thai travel agents or tuk-tuk drivers, who usually earn a commission for steering in the unwary to third-rate places. Certainly BMP could never survive on positive word-of-mouth. To start with, it is located well away from anything you care to see. Upon arrival you are sat down and sold a tour of some sort, and one is not enough -- they will try to book your whole time in Chiang Mai for you. The rooms in the main building are barely passable, but their "A" annex is heinous and noisy: it backs up to the kitchen and the performance stage in the outdoor bar. The kitchen staff parties literally all night. Avoid the overpriced on-site restaurant and enjoy a wonderful locals' market just to the south (take a left as you leave the compound, then another left). My suggestion for finding a guest house in Chiang Mai: look toward the northwest corner of the square moat.

  • Liked — I could walk to the airport and get the heck out of Chiang Mai.
  • Disliked — It existed not to provide value but to squeeze whatever it could out of guests.

We booked and paid for 5 nights in the BMP (Backpacker's Meeting Place) guest house at one of those scam tourist places in Bangkok that get you in and then claim ythe hotel you really want isn't available. They told us this one was very nice and right where we wanted to be.

It wasn't in the old area of Chiang Mai and it cost about 3 dollars to get there by tuk tuk or a 15 minute walk. They are out of the way of pretty much everything of tourist interest in the city.

Their treking tours seemed expensive when we looked at them on arrival and when we compared their prices to other operators in the city our suspicions were confirmed.

There were no restaurants in close proximity to the BMP, except their own, and it was not a pleasent experience. The food took forever to come and when it got there, it was invaribly cold and bland.

The room had a mouldy smell to it, as did the second room we got. Though clean and with comfy beds, there was lots of noise outside from the other residents to keep you from enjoying your sleep.

We wanted to go to a hotel closer to the old area and when we asked, they flatly refused to refund anything. We ended up just walking away from the last three nights and booking into a much nicer, and cheaper, guest house.

We would not recommend the BMP guest house.
