Smile House Guest House

After staying for four nights at 3Sis, my travel companion and I struck out to find cheaper accomodations for another five nights in Chiang Mai. The room we found at Smile House, at THB 700/night, was less than half of what we paid at 3Sis. Smile House was, indeed, more basic, and breakfast was not included, but it was still a satisfying stay.

I wanted a quieter place, and got it at Smile House, which is located off a lightlly travelled alley and very close to a bunch of useful places: motorcycle rental, restaurants, bars, massage places, coffee shops. The bed was fine and the TV worked (only Thai channnels). There were a few niggly things, like a bathroom with no ventilation and a lukewarm shower, an AC that might not cut it in the hot season, and some noise from the room above ours.

Although it's called Smile House, I think one of the desk managers there tried not to smile on purpose. Ironically, though, she was very helpful and arranged for us a delightful cooking class and bus tickets to Chiang Rai. Unlike 3Sis, which processed a four-night room charge upon check-in, Smile House let us pay by the day.

The pool is small and was cold when we were there.

Pro:

1) Great value considering the location;

2) Walking distance to Sunday market, cooking schools, book stores, McDonald's, Starbucks;

3) On-site pool;

4) Western cafe and laundry service right next door.

Con:

1) Room walls clearly need new paint;

2) Wi-fi is hit and miss; but there are computers for use onsite for a fee;

3) Our friends' room had a leaky sink, but they fixed it later the same day.

It is a nice and comfortable little place. We stayed in one of the room next to the pool nice and quiet at night, but a bit lound when kids swimming in the vening. Helpful staffs with good enough english, The pool was nice with enogh space for some sunbath. I was there last week they were doing some painting work on the other side rooms, hopfully it is done by now. Well, recommend for anyone who like to stay in town and close to everywhere you need to go, short walking distance to temples in town.

Room Tip: Air-con rooms next to the pool or fan room upstair in the buiding behind, but if they are done with...

I was impressed with the extremely comfortable room at Smile House Guest House.
There was a lot of light coming through a number of windows , the bed was extremely comfortable and the shared bathroom was kept extremely clean.
The pool and the pool side ambience lends itself to a restful area to sun tan , read or sometimes meet interesting folks.
The surrounding was relatively quiet by Chiang Mai standards.
I have been spending my winters in Chiang Mai for the past 20 winters and find Smile House a find in a little soi off a main soi where all my favorite restaurants are within a 3 minute walk.
