“Paradise - no other word for it”
Reviewed August 11, 2014

We stayed here for 4 nights and completely fell in love with the place. Entering the resort is literally stepping into paradise, the gardens it is named for are beautifully green and lush, and flocking with birds and more butterflies than I've ever seen before in the wild.
Tim was welcoming and full of advice (it was our first ever visit to Chiang Mai), and she and her staff cooked some of the best food we had while in Thailand (anyone who has been will know that's saying something!). I still can't believe breakfast was included either, given the quantity of food we were given!
It's located a little while out of Chiang Mai which adds to the peace and quiet, but there are busses (of the covered pickup truck variety) up and down the main road about every 10 minutes, and it's 16THB per person into town (they stop in Chinatown). The busses only run until 9:30-10pm but we found a useful trick after then was to grab a tuk-tuk to the bus station where there were plenty of taxis who could run us up the road for 250THB.
The bungalow itself was immaculately clean, with fresh towels daily, air conditioning, good size bathroom with heated shower, and an area with a sink and a fridge. We also found that they're pretty well insulated against insects as well, which is rare to find.
If we were to visit Chiang Mai again we might choose to stay in town (for convenience and to get the experience really), but I certainly wouldn't mark the out-of-town location as a downside unless you're simply going to Chiang Mai for the nightlife.

This review is a little overdue, but due to the length of our stay, this place required some more reflection. My wife and I booked one of the larger bungalows during the quiet season, with the intention of travelling and experiencing more of Thailand. As a base, Romyen Garden Resort was the perfect place for us. Whether returning from a busy day in the city, or from a 5 day motorcycle trip around the Maehongson loop, it always felt like coming home. As for transport, we had the advantage of commuting wherever we liked with our ‘free spirit’ rented motorcycle, so the 11km distance into town was all part of the daily enjoyment. Actually, we became very good at carrying back home some priority essentials, like vegemite, rye bread, soy milk etc. purchased from the new Central Festival mall. Our backpack became increasingly heavier too each day as we navigated our way through traffic, and never once did we complain of sporting helmet hair, much!

Romyen Garden is tucked away nicely behind some peaceful rice fields on route 118. It has several comfortable bungalows nestled throughout a tropical garden setting; here you will find playful little squirrels, gorgeous birds and dragonflies, yes, and even jumping catfish in the pond. Not to mention the charming, always singing and dancing housemaid – Duang. Special thanks go to Lung Lai and his offsider for keeping all the wheels turning during our stay. My hand gesturing communication skills must have been a frightening sight indeed!! And last, but not least; a warm Thank You to Tim the English speaking manager, for making this adventure possible. I know we shall cross paths again, for we have already begun to plan our return trip :)

We stayed at this lovely resort for 3 nights & realy enjoyed it. It has lush tropical garden & the manager Tim cooked the tasty thai food at your preference. The location is 20min by taxi to town or night bazaar & it is a good idea take the resort phone number with you as it is easier for the driver to call the owner Tim for the direction when you return. This is ok as we have been in Chaing mai & done a few things before & didn't want to rush around town or outings every day as inroom wifi is good / watch good selection of DVD or in house massage ( at BHT200-300 per hr - Tim can organise it for you ) or lazy around on the raining days is just what we wanted....Tim & staff are always there if you need anything, she studied in Australia & speak very good English. She will give you good tip about sight seeing or order a taxi for you... Unfortunately her dear aunty passed away recently & we didn't get to taste her authetic local thai food, but Tim is also a great cook, she cooked best sweet & sour fish on our first night. We would like to return one day as it is a peaceful & relaxing resort & I loved our bungalow surrounded by the lush greenery....it left us a beautiful memory.

Room Tip: Bungalow 3 is good as it has a secluded decking, we stay 2 stranded rooms B4/1 & B4/2 joined by...

We stayed at the Romyen Garden Resort in January for 4 nights and overall were very happy with the experience. The grounds are gorgeous, it really lives up to its name! My two roommates and I travelled to Chiang Mai with the intent of getting a more cultural experience, and this hidden gem made the feel of our trip quite nice. The manager is extremely nice and helpful and speaks excellent English. I stopped in the office on our first full day and she recommended a driver to us (which we did end up using for one of our sightseeing days and it was a TREMENDOUS help!) as well as how to get around. The other workers don't speak much English, but are helpful as well. They also give a you complimentary fresh coconut upon arrival :)

They do serve food, though it's best to let them know in advance so that they know what to pick up from the market to prepare for you. They served us dinner even late into the night - around 10pm - and also let us prepare some of our own breakfast to our likings, since myself and my friend had some dietary restrictions that we had a little trouble conveying to them (the kitchen is a small shack next to the main office/house that they prepare all of the homemade meals in, so we just joined in with the workers and prepared our food alongside them). Otherwise, they obviously do prepare the breakfast for you (although it was unclear what time breakfast actually started), we just asked to prepare our own and I thought it was very nice of them to let us do so.

The only real issue we had here was with some of the scheduling. They have a masseuse that comes in so we asked to have a 1-hour massage for each of us. On the day of our appointment, we headed back in from the city early to get there in time to start at 6pm (there was only one masseuse, so it was going to take 3 hours for all of us to do it). We got there and were told that he was running late (I think he had accepted another customer before us), and he didn't end up starting with us until 9pm. We were a bit upset by this, since we had cut our day in the city short to make it back, and one of my roommates was shorted about 15 minutes of her massage because it had gotten so late (it was around midnight by the time he was done).

One thing to note about Romyen is that it is about 10km outside the city, which is a bit of a blessing and a curse. Our biggest issue for the trip was getting to and from the resort, since most of the taxis didn't know where it was (*especially* coming in from the train station...it was a bit of a process). We ended up having them call the Romyen office to talk to the manager to explain the location on multiple occassions. Be sure to talk to her at the beginning of your trip to find out which cabs will take you, because different colored ones go to different places. And don't be afraid to haggle the prices of the cabs ;) They also have bicycles for free you can use (although one of them was pretty busted and was an uncomfortable ride to have for 10km!), or you can rent a motorbike from them as well.

The rooms were nice and clean and included a kitchen, fridge, small table and TV. The shower has a heater for the water and although some of the shelving and such could use a makeover (some of it was falling off the walls a bit), it worked out all right for us. Air con worked well, though we definitely didn't need it at night haha (we had no idea it got so cold at night in Chiang Mai!). There is also a coin operated washer available and clotheslines for drying.

There isn't much nearby in the way of food/amenities, since it's tucked away into the countryside. But, this shouldn't be much of a problem if you're planning on getting out and doing activities/sightseeing anyway.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much. The beauty of the place and the hospitality of the staff was amazing. The manager even lent me one of her coats when we were waiting outside at one point because it had gotten so cold and I didn't have any warm clothing with me - it really showed what kind people they are. I would recommend staying here, especially if you want to feel like you've really "escaped into Thailand."

This place is just magical. After reading so many great reviews, my husband and I were so intrigued and curious about this hotel that we decided to take our chances here. While waiting for our trip, we had butterflies in our stomach because it was so cheap plus we had never stayed in a homestay, b&b or anything like that before. At the same time, we love nature so much and staying at a rural like area in northern Thailand this seemed quite adventurous and exactly the perfect kind of thing for us. And oh my God, it was.
As I write this, I don't seem to find the words to start describing such an idyllic and lovely place.

At the moment we arrived, we were received by Tim, the owner, with a warmth smile and she took us directly to our private bungalow. The room and bathroom are quite simple, but IMPECCABLY clean and this immediately gave us a comfy feeling. Towels and linens are fresh and replaced everyday. We liked to stay in our front porch laid down listening to the birds orchestra, watching butterflies and dragonflies as they passed by and even a nice and fast squirrel at the top of the tree.
Of course there are cute gueckos all around but then again, you are in their habitat.

The ambiance had a relaxing music at all times and at night, the colorful big lamps near the dining area gave us a charming feeling.

Now the food. Oh my Dear Lord! Tim cooked exclusively for us all the 3 nights and it was absolutely the best food we ate in our trip to Thailand and Cambodia! You wouldn't believe the wonderful food she makes! I'm pretty sure somewhere there's someone very proud of her for that =) Also, we had some really interesting conversations pretty much about everything until late at night! You can clearly see Tim is a good person who loves what she has built and takes care with so much devotion and love. Oh, and did I mention breakfast is at any time you want it to be? From 6am until late in the afternoon if that's how you wish!

Now about the location, many people here said it was the downside. From my perspective, it was exactly the opposite. It really is a bit far from the city (~30m, you can easily go by taxi or public transportation ) but truly speaking, if you are just going to see main temples and street in Chiang Mai, one day is enough. The really interesting things about Chiang Mai are outside the city anyway! (Bhubing Palace, Doi Suthep or the ENP - Elephant Nature Park, basically the only ethical elephant park around). I didn't bother at all staying away from the city, we closed a deal with a taxi who would take us wherever we wanted for the whole day giving us the space we so much like to keep to ourselves for a reasonable price (1500 Baht).

This was truly a little piece of heaven we found here and my husband and I will forever treasure our entire experience at this place. If you're going to Chiang Mai and loves nature, don't think twice and book this place right away!

had a wonderful experience at this "homestay" resort, half an hour away from the City. The song-teaw transportation to and from the city was fast, efficient and cheap (Just THB 16 per person) with a frequency of every 5-15 minutes. Manager/co-owner Khun Tim personally cooked the Thai meals that we had at the resort. They were far superior to any restaurant food. We had lovely after dinner conversations. Khun Tim was very helpful with tips on places, etc. She is western educated and speaks very good English.
The place is undergoing renovation and should be even better for future travellers. We stayed in the their best bungalow (#3). The AC works fine as does the Wi-fi internet. A boon in this remote locate. The main highway is just a 5-7 minute walk from the resort.
Well worth a visit. You wont be disappointed! Ask Kun Tim to book airport pickup and drop for THB 350 each. Well worth it in a very comfortable AC van with courteous driver Khun Pray.

Room Tip: Go for Bungalow 3. More expensive than the rest, but worth it.

We chose the Romyen because we wanted to experience the countryside after so many stays in Thai cities. Country we got! The grounds are extensive and beautiful, filled with flowers and trees. We woke to birdsong every morning and slept to "jungle noises" at night. The owner was extremely accommodating. We were the only people staying at the time. We had a huge American style breakfast every morning at the time we wanted it. We requested dinner each of the 3 nights we stayed. The food was extremely good, plentiful and varied each night. Our final morning, the owner set us up with therapeutic massages, done in our bungalow. I must say it is probably the best healing massage I have ever had, and only 500 baht for 2 hours.

You do have to be aware of what you are getting into here. I wanted to photograph local flora and fauna, and this is a great spot for that. Our Deluxe bungalow is open to the air in several places, no window screens. If having lizards and bugs in your house bothers you, this is probably not the place for you. Bring your bug repellant, mosquitos thrive here and they tended to congregate in our bathroom. The other members of our party had the standard twin bed bungalow and it was much better sealed off from the outdoors. Also, the location is very remote a nd you have to make your own fun. City is a 350 to 400 baht cab ride away. We used the Romyen as our staging ground for two days of touring with Asia Plus Travel and were quite happy. The owner will let you ride the resort bicycles around and up to a nearby botanical garden and swimming pool. All in all we enjoyed the beauty and character of this place. One more tip. Chiang Mai is full of smoke in March due to farmers burning fields. It didn't bother us much but we ideally would have chosen a different time to visit here.
