“Dirty hotel”
Reviewed January 22, 2014

Stayed the last night in this hotel. The room was dirty, sink stuck and there was a half eaten sandwich in the fridge. There were also cobwebs in the room?
It is a large hotel, and just out of the old city and thus pretty good location to walk to the old city
Avoid, avoid, avoid

We just checked out of a 4 night stay at the Royal Peninsula hotel in Chiang Mai. My wife and I travel a fair bit and we're the sort that like hotels, with character preferably. That is to say, we don't find the backpackers hostels experience optimal, nor do we particularly enjoy the amenities and prices of the highest end hotels. For us, this hotel was perfect.

The staff are nice, particularly so if you are also nice (that is the way with the Thai people generally, no?). Breakfast was a treat in that you had both Western and Asian options, and it was buffet style. The wireless internet was the fastest we've encountered in Thailand (and faster by far than anything we encountered in Japan last week even) and the room was comfortable. Some might not enjoy the dimmer lighting or the fact that the rooms are a bit older, but I thought they were charming. For the price you pay, you get very good value from a Western perspective.

The best part about the stay here, for me, was the location. It is just outside of Siphum corner and a 5-10 minute walk will get you to anything you need - food, pharmacy, temple. The old city is literally down the road, and given how crowded it can get in the old city, I actually liked being *just* outside the moat a lot better. I'm not sure how out of shape or immobile some of the other reviewers complaining about distance are, but the 5 minute walk was a pleasant start to all our adventures. And if you're that worried about the distance anyway, save yourself the money of a closer hotel still and grab the 60-100 bhat tuk tuk wherever it is you want to go.

Oh, and we did eat at the restaurant one night and for dinner and found it to be as good as any other in Chiang Mai and somehow less expensive than most!

Room Tip: We were on the third floor - if you're pick about noise ask to be away from the roadside. I had...

We got upgraded to this hotel after some problems at the Royal Panerai (the less nice sister hotel).
The bathroom wasn't very nice (a bit of mould), but it had decent hot water. The room was old-fashioned. We didn't have any noise issues (we WERE the noise issue - sorry, neighbours!). The beds were just okay. It was definitely an upgrade from the Panerai, but not amazing (although affordable - if you want a good deal it's fine).
Breakfast was included. Typical Thailand hotel breakfast - edible, nothing great.
Staff were helpful with everything. Answered our questions. There's a person to book tours and stuff in the hotel. We didn't book anything through her, but one time our pick-up for a tour was late and she was nice enough to call the company for us and figure out where they were (at the Panerai because they didn't get the message we had moved).
We had dinner in the restaurant one night. They had karaoke, which was pretty cool. Dinner was okay. It was one of the worst meals we ate in Thailand - but I think we picked food we didn't like (not that it was badly cooked or anything). We got a curry and it had those asian eggplants in it and they ruined it, and then something we got was waaaaay too spicy. So not the fault of the cooks, we just didn't like it.

Located in middle of no where, staff not friendly, confirmed room but provide incorrect room from booking.
Attitude toward guest is unacceptable, please be careful with this hotel. Choose other if you have alternatives. I don't recommend this hotel.

The hotel was super cheap and the room was decent. The bed was pretty comfortable and the restaurant was ok for the price paid. Said this, it's around 20 to 25 minutes away walking from the night bazaar or the main temples and many tuk-tuks (the main way of transportation in Thailand) didn't wanted to get us there for being too far. When we checked-in the hotel had sold out and we had to wait to get a worse toom than the one we booked and we didn't get ours untils the next day in the afternoon. If you are looking for something cheap just to sleep this is your place but don't think of it like a 3 star like the ones in Europe or North-America. As a last comment don't spect to have a long swim on the pool, it is really small.

Room Tip: The best rooms are the ones facing the back of the hotel to avoid traffic sounds but don't be on...

I stayed in royal panerai (sister hotel) for five nights. Royal peninsula is supposed to be a better hotel than royal penarai but no as expected. The superior room is smaller than Panerai's. I was given a noisy room which was on the top floor. Kept hearing mechanic noise. The reception gave a twin room instead, however, that was a connecting room which had very poor soundproof. I could hear someone talking and laughing next door very clearly. The hotel is very dark in the day time. Doesn't have lighting on the hall way and lobby. I'd rather stay in Panerai.BTW, Mr Itipon at concierge is very friendly and helpful.

Me and my girlfriend are backpacking for 6 months, staying in guesthouses is great and cheap, but sometines its nice to check in on a nice hotel and get a bit romantic!

Nice staff, beautiful room and clean. The location is pretty great too, takes about 5 min. to walk to the old town.

Had breakfast at G.G Restaurant 200m from the hotel, recomended!!
