OK...I do LOVE Thailand, and one of my favorite places IS Chiangmai, and I have stayed in most of the small boutique hotels...but once I found this one (and it was tucked away) I just cannot imagine staying anywhere else in the future. The photos on their website accurately show this beautiful property so I have not added any to this review.
This GEM of a hotel is family run by a young couple who spent several years building it in a wonderful diverse neighborhood near the river and close enough to the old city to walk in, if you desire. The good news is that once you enter the driveway of the property, someone (usually two or three people) is there to welcome you. How do they know your taxi just turned the corner or your tuk tuk just wheeled in? Never figured that out, but it never failed.
Then, once you cross into the lush and beautiful courtyard you are surrounded by carefully planned and executed charm in every detail including the Spirit house, the koi pond with little pagoda fountains, the covered verandah, the outdoor dining room, the perfectly sized pool complete with its own pagoda...the meandering path that leads to the rooms…everywhere you look there is beauty and serenity. It's just a place you want to call home. I spent 7 days there in Oct 2008 with 5 friends and we all cried the day we had to leave. We felt like family...like honored guests...like old friends...all at once. It’s a special gift for a hotelier to create that kind of intimacy while delivering perfect service.
Here are just a few of the things that make it special:
The staff is naturally friendly and genuinely helpful
The rooms are perfect in size, décor and amenities
The food is wonderful…and the chef is cute
The pool is clean and serene
The spa services are top notch
The location is convenient and quiet
Extra special touches are:
A flower on your pillow every night at turn down time and fresh fruit daily
You NEVER see a maid or a maid cart…but somehow your room is cleaned
Rain bath shower heads and spa tubs in all the rooms
Free wireless internet that actually works in either your room or the complimentary computers they provide in the library
The staff anticipates your needs, like bringing ice and glasses to the pool
The staff goes beyond your expectations, like a free tuk tuk ride into the night market, or to a spa
They serve a cooked to order breakfast with different and unique special dishes every day instead of the same old boring buffet every morning
While we were there my sister had a birthday and they baked her a cake and threw her a party…without us asking.
One morning we left at sunrise to see Doi Suthep and they packed us “breakfast boxes” since we would miss breakfast.
Although the Oriental, the Chedi, the Four Seasons and Shangri-La have hotels that are rated with 5-stars in Chiangmai, they look pretty ordinary after the treat of true Thai hospitality effortlessly delivered by the owners and staff at Puripunn.
My apologies for the mediocre photo of the lovely people that are Puripunn...I promise to post a better one in future.
