Puripunn Baby Grand Boutique Hotel

OK...I do LOVE Thailand, and one of my favorite places IS Chiangmai, and I have stayed in most of the small boutique hotels...but once I found this one (and it was tucked away) I just cannot imagine staying anywhere else in the future. The photos on their website accurately show this beautiful property so I have not added any to this review.

This GEM of a hotel is family run by a young couple who spent several years building it in a wonderful diverse neighborhood near the river and close enough to the old city to walk in, if you desire. The good news is that once you enter the driveway of the property, someone (usually two or three people) is there to welcome you. How do they know your taxi just turned the corner or your tuk tuk just wheeled in? Never figured that out, but it never failed.

Then, once you cross into the lush and beautiful courtyard you are surrounded by carefully planned and executed charm in every detail including the Spirit house, the koi pond with little pagoda fountains, the covered verandah, the outdoor dining room, the perfectly sized pool complete with its own pagoda...the meandering path that leads to the rooms…everywhere you look there is beauty and serenity. It's just a place you want to call home. I spent 7 days there in Oct 2008 with 5 friends and we all cried the day we had to leave. We felt like family...like honored guests...like old friends...all at once. It’s a special gift for a hotelier to create that kind of intimacy while delivering perfect service.

Here are just a few of the things that make it special:
The staff is naturally friendly and genuinely helpful
The rooms are perfect in size, décor and amenities
The food is wonderful…and the chef is cute
The pool is clean and serene
The spa services are top notch
The location is convenient and quiet

Extra special touches are:
A flower on your pillow every night at turn down time and fresh fruit daily
You NEVER see a maid or a maid cart…but somehow your room is cleaned
Rain bath shower heads and spa tubs in all the rooms
Free wireless internet that actually works in either your room or the complimentary computers they provide in the library
The staff anticipates your needs, like bringing ice and glasses to the pool
The staff goes beyond your expectations, like a free tuk tuk ride into the night market, or to a spa
They serve a cooked to order breakfast with different and unique special dishes every day instead of the same old boring buffet every morning

While we were there my sister had a birthday and they baked her a cake and threw her a party…without us asking.

One morning we left at sunrise to see Doi Suthep and they packed us “breakfast boxes” since we would miss breakfast.

Although the Oriental, the Chedi, the Four Seasons and Shangri-La have hotels that are rated with 5-stars in Chiangmai, they look pretty ordinary after the treat of true Thai hospitality effortlessly delivered by the owners and staff at Puripunn.

My apologies for the mediocre photo of the lovely people that are Puripunn...I promise to post a better one in future.

I can't recommend this place highly enough. It's like you've stumbled into an oasis (both literally and figuratively) in the middle of bustling Chiang Mai.

Service is gobsmackingly good - I could gush for hours about the various little things the staff did for us that made our stay so special. Suffice to say that NOTHING is too much trouble...it's almost like the staff are psychic and know what you want before you do and get it to you without fuss or hassle.

The decor is completely gorgeous - the gardens, the lobby, the restaurant, the bar...all totally lovely, as of course are the rooms. We stayed in one of the Signature Suites which are the ones which open directly onto the communal garden and pool area and I would say it's defintely worth the extra cost for the little outside veranda area alone (not to mention the rain shower, the absolutely enormous bath and the day bed in the bathroom which is great for lounging around on, generally being lazy without actually having a get into your real bed).

It's not the cheapest place to stay, but nor is it the most expensive place on offer in Chiang Mai and I am sure that you will leave Puripunn thinking you have had a bargain regardless of how much you have spent.

Book it now.

My stay at the Puripunn was amazing. The accomadations were beautiful, peaceful and serene. The staff could not have been more attentive, and gracious. The food was excellent as was the service. I would go back in a minute. In fact, I cried when I left.

There are very few hotels in the world that leave you feeling that you've been treated to an unforgetable experience, something that ties you forever to that place. Puripunn is one of those hotels. Upon arrival our breath was taken away by the gently lit courtyard that promised hours of admiration, and the elegantly dressed staff that beckoned us in. It was the beginning of a wonderful 6 night stay that never ceased to make us feel that we were lucky to stay at this grand estate. The rooms were beautifully designed, with our favorite one having a large tub and separate shower that opened onto a patio and the pool beyond. In fact we were so inspired by the architecture of the hotel that we took loads of photos and have decided that our future home will be decorated in the Lan-Na style of the Puripunn. The owners and their staff offered such constant care and service that I felt my heart sink when I left the hotel for Koh Samui. We rate the Puripunn a 10 Diamond hotel and are anxious to share our find with you and all our friends. We will certainly return.

I stayed at the Puripunn, together with my wife and five-year old boy, for two weeks over mid-July, 2008. It was a truly wonderful experience! This boutique hotel is located in the middle of a traditional residential area just outside the old city walls of Chiang Mia. So the setting is natural and restful. Moreover, this area is located alongside the Ping River which is flanked by a road full of great, inexpensive restaurants and bars, as well as galleries. It's also within walking distance from the central markets. So the location is excellent.
The hotel itself is very beautiful and comfortable. The rooms are lovely and well-appointed with large bathrooms. The food is good and the service is of the highest standard. Being a boutique hotel one doesn't feel like just another paying guest. Indeed, what was most striking for us about the Puripunn was the people who run and work in the place. The owner/managers are a young family with a genuine desire to make their guests feel at home. No trouble was spared to make stay comfortable and pleasant. The staff are both friendly and efficient and go out of their way to help. There's a shuttle service into town throughout the day and free internet use, plus a well-equipped gym and sizeable swimming pool.
Oh, by the way, couples will find this a retreat but it is also children friendly! I can't recommend this place enough. We haven't had such an enjoyable hotel experience in a long time - and we are a well-travelled family. Try it out for yourself and I'm sure you'll agree with my review.

The Puripunn Baby Grand was exquisite. We stayed for 5 days during our honeymoon in August and loved the gorgeous setting and amazing hospitality. The courtyard was set in a 'secret garden' sort of setting and the room was very nicely furnished. Staff were very friendly and provided helpful advice on local activities and sights to see. The restaurant had a nice selection of foods - both Thai and North American tastes. We found the location to be quite convenient; just a short walk away from the heart of Chiang Mai with many temples and restaurants nearby. Highly recommended if you are looking for a quiet, elegant place to stay.
