In Thailand there are special temples that honor the animal of a birth year. This is the temple which represents the Year of the Snake. Beautiful snake sculptures are throughout the grounds which are abundantly beautiful. The Wat and stupas are wonderful as well.

A walk around the grounds creates a feeling of inner peace - very calming. The mix of nature with the ruins makes this well worth a stop even though it is not near the old city - closer to the trendy Nimmanhaeman area but along the highway. For those who enjoy old architecture, ruins and history this is worth a visit.

...most people wouldn't expect such an extended temple area. Wat Jed Yod contains a large number of stupas and is in my eyes one of the most interesting temples in Chiang Mai. The buildings are old and they are situated along a historic route to Birma - most structures are in ruins but this makes the place more authentic than all the overrenovated temples inside of the city.

Amazing architecture decoration and sculpture, try and go early in the hot months, it will make your experience more pleasurable. I personally did not see the reclining Buddha for it was just too hot and too many people.
Many interesting surrounding spaces will keep you entertained.
Also you may go in with shorts (not the kind hookers wear) but just above the knee is absolutely fine.
