Owner description: Temple built on what were once a 14th-century monarch's gardens. Today, site of a Buddhist university and a popular spot for photographers, especially during sunset. Some of the temple's chedis (spires) contain ashes of Chiang Mai's royal family. Also, one can see half of a holy Buddhist relic brought from Sukothai in 1371, which unfortunately split into two upon arrival in Chiang Mai. The other half is buried at Doi Suthep. A 500-year-old bronze Buddha image, one of the largest in northern Thailand, is also housed here, in the small hall at the back of the compound.

Go early morning - sunrise and especially in cool season (Nov-Feb) there is often a little mist over Doi Pui which adds to the specticle.

This site contains not only temples which are used by the monks but also is a burial ground for the old Kings of Chiang Mai. In the front garden is a Bodi tree which is said to be the tree that Buddha sat under when gaining enlightenment. Here you can also make an appointment to speak with a monk.

lovely place and make sure you visit the small temple to the side - not just the main complex - it has one of the most beautiful Buddha's in North Thailand

Lovely Wat with cemetary of Chiang Mai royal family attached. Also house a large university. Visit Mon, Wed or Fri between 5-7 to participate in a Monk Chat. The monks will sit with you to discuss almost anything you would wish. They enlighten you on their beliefs and you help them practice their language skills. We met with a charming and humble 3rd year student from Myanmar. It was a wonderful experience. They have numerous books and tracks on Buddhism available to you if you wish. Definitely woul go again.

So amazing they have dogs guarding your shoes outside. It's beautiful outside and inside. Inside they have monks selling the buddha tablets encased in a plastic holder. They're really affordable. It's always amusing to see the monks surf the web on their laptops and see the donations and offerings the people have left for the monks. There are trees with animals corresponding to the chinese zodiac in side too.
The outside is amazing, so snap as many pictures as you can.
