Chiang Mai Gate hotel is walking distance to the city center and all the stunning Chiang Mai wats, Sunday Market and there is daily free pick-up to Night Bazaar. These are probably the best advantages of the hotel. There is lovely swimming pool and average buffet breakfast included. Room was very spacious and there was really big and comfy bed, room was very clean (we chose standard room for 1000THB/night). The only problem with room was bathroom, which was kind of broken, it was very difficult to flush the toilet, and another problem was when the water in wash-basin or bath was running it was flowing everywhere cause of bad caulking. We ordered train station drop-off in the end of our stay and the driver normally took us to the station, but it was bus station, which we realized later when he was gone, cause we didn't know how it looked like... We wrote to the reception that we wanted train station drop-off, and also asked them before leaving and they confirmed, so bad experience in the end:-(

All in all this was a nice hotel for the money. The major drawback for us was that the pool was so cold. With two kids under 7 the pool was something the whole family was looking forward to. We gave it a try but the kids started shivering immediately. The breakfasts were decent with 'American' and Thai style breakfasts. We had good service while we were there and friendly staff. We stayed in the Royal Suite and liked our rooms. We had no problem with the A/C at all. The showeres were hot and cold and that was a small pain. The hotel computers were convenient and the internet rates (50BHT/hr) quite modest. If it weren't for the pool I would stay in this hotel again. I'd rather spend a little bit more and get a pool the family can actually use.

On the positive side the Chiang Mai Gate hotel is well located in a quiet street, easy walking distance to markets and the 'old town' area.
We opted for a 'superior room' for a 6 night stay.
The airconditioning in the room was virtually useless, doing little more than circulate hot ambient air around the room. Discussion with other guests indicated that this was the same in other rooms, not just a problem with ours. Often the temperature outside was much cooler, but because there are no insect screens on the window you couldn't open it or the room would be full of mosquitoes.
On the first day there were many tiny ants around the room, on the bed and sideboards, when the room was serviced the next day they sprayed and this got rid of the ant problem, though they were starting to reappear by the end of our stay.
The water in the shower was a problem, sometimes nothing but hot, other times nothing but cold, rarely both available at the same time. Also the water pressure was extremely low and it was difficult to get really wet in the shower, more of a drizzly mist than a full shower.
We tried the breakfast once and were not very impressed, certainly the little cafe/restaurant opposite the hotel did a much better breakfast and at a lower price.
This sounds like we are really down on the place but that is not exactly accurate, I just think that for the same money you could probably find something better in Chiang Mai.
