Regular, basic hotel with not much personality. Location is ok (for night market you need to ride their van or get a tuktuk), but has some restaurants nearby. Service was ok, the in room wifi signal didnt reach our room so it was a waste of money. Breakfast was good.

We are in day 6 off an 8 day stay in a deluxe room. This is a very good, probably 3-star, Asian hotel. The rooms have plenty of space, with fridge and safe and two arm chairs. The pool and its associated bar are more than adequate. Breakfast is a bit boring (but plenty of other good places around). The in-house Wi-Fi is definitely poor! Yes, I'd use the place again.

Me and my wife we stayed in Chiang Mai Gate for 5 nights from 13th November 2012.

Overall a Charming hotel with very friendly staff, very laid back feel.
It's within walking distance of Chiang Mai Gate, on the perimeter of the large moated square in the centre of the city.
On the way we found a large bike dealer where we hired a motorbike.
There is also a fantastic night market on the left just before you get to the moated square
There is also a laundry just across the road, and an agent for booking day trips next door (cheaper than the hotel!)

Having just come from Bangkok where we stayed in probably a 4 star hotel,
the 'Gate' was a bit of a drop in standards - but that was just what we had got used to in Bangkok.
The room was basic, details not good, ropy shower, massive bed (if you like to lose your partner in it!)

Breakfast varied in quality. 1st morning coffee was awful.

Because of hotel breakfast wasn't great, we looked for an alternative for eating later.
We found a fantastic restaurant next door where we ended up going every night

Nice swimming pool, noisy cockerels crowing next door constantly.
You can get a really good Thai massage in the shop next to the tailor (near the pool).
The computers in the lobby for internet browsing are using Internet Explorer V6 (current version 9) and run incredibly slowly.
They might as well not be there. Best to use the free wifi on your smartphone or bring the laptop next time.

After spending some time in Chiang mai - which we fell in love with - we stopped worrying about the details in the hotel.
It actually fits in with the surroundings - very laid back. Overall pretty good for the money.

Tourist information desk adviser was incredibly helpful and kind, nothing was to much trouble for her as she went out of her way to find us information. It was also very easy to communicate with her. i recommend her advice if you are staying at this wonderful hotel.

Great big lobby and entrance area. we stayed in the standard twin rooms which were nice enough, basic but clean and roomy. The baths at the base are plastic so when you have a shower the sound of the water hitting the bath is actually quite loud (i was woken by the neighboring rooms having showers... so something to keep in mind to try not wake up your partner in your room.
A close walk to the 'old city' and the main temples... and about a 10-15min taxi to the airport.
Buffet breakfast was standard, nice but not standout quality.
Very close to the Ratchadamnoen Road which holds the big night market once a month - this is worth a look as it does have different things to the main Chaing Mai markets.

My wife and I stayed here for 7 nights. I feel it was a good value for the money. It has a pretty nice lobby area and pool. The room itself is dated but nice. The bed is very large but not particularly comfortable. It was nice having a balcony and a bathroom with a tub. The in room safe is large enough for a laptop. My main complaint is that we didn't get wifi in the room. We would have to go down to the lobby for wifi. That seems small but when you need to send some emails it is a real pain. I loved the location. It is near the Chiang Mai gate, which is you have seem the map of Chiang Mai that most places give out, is the bottom edge. Every night there is a food market right by the gate with all kinds of food vendors. It's a great place to grab dinner. It is also very close to the Saturday night market. The sunday market is about a 20 minute walk away but there are cool temples along the way. The Night Bizarre is more like a 40 minute walk away but its a scenic walk. You could always take a red truck and get there real quick. One thing to note, if you are easily distracted while trying to relax at the pool then this may not be great for you. Behind the back wall of the pool are roosters and they crow all day. Literally until sun down. The mini bar prices in room aren't bad but there is a convenient store on the same block that has everything that is available in room for cheaper.

The Chiang Mai Gate has undergone a wonderful transformation since 2012 with a more art decoish looking lobby and the surroundings. I have stayed here all the time when I am here and the reasons are very simple, quiet ambience, wonderful staff from the bell boys to the manager on duty, breakfast with one of the best black coffee in Chiang Mai, clean and comfy bedroom with cable tv and just minutes away from everywhere. You can just rest here and spent time reading in the lobby or just travel away from Ching Mai with the many tour shops in and near the hotel. Recommended as always.

Room Tip: Any rooms above the 3rd floor should be quiet but then, the neighbouring area is also peaceful so yo...
