The Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai
Ranked #2 of 389 Hotels in Chiang Mai
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 3, 2014

When we first stayed at this hotel it was still under the management of Mandarin Oriental (spring 2013) and there were many things that needed improvement. Even though we liked the concept we didn’t enjoy our stay. The Dhara Devi is made like a luxury version of a Thai village. But this concept is only working if the villas, gardens, parks, padi fields, temples, restaurants, spas etc. are very well maintained.
Now that we returned to Chiang Mai in February 2014 and we heard that the owner had separated from the Mandarin Oriental and would actually manage the hotel himself we thought we’ll give it a second try.
And guess what? Everything has so much improved that you almost think this must be a different hotel! Now it is really perfect and the Dhara Devi has raised the bar for luxury hotels worldwide! With a lot of devotion to all details, the gardens, parks, padi fields and Villas in traditional Lanna style, temples, restaurants, spas were renovated and rearranged and that definitely was worth the effort! Now we enjoyed every moment of our stay and we loved strolling or cycling around in this ample compound. Even after days you still haven’t seen it all …
The breakfast buffet leaves nothing to be desired, the restaurants are excellent and the service extraordinary. All staff members were very friendly and attentive.
We think the Dhara Devi of today is definitely the best hotel we’ve seen and absolutely recommend it!

Room Tip: It's hard to make a mistake if you choose Dhara Devi ;-)

Huge property that was overwhelming in its grandeur but also eerily quiet. Its like everyone had left.
The bikes are great to see all the cobbled paths, old ruins, temples and villas.
You could have 1000 guests at this resort and still not feel crowded.
We were the only persons two nights in a row to enjoy a drink at the Rice paddy bar, was the only guests in the Horn bar two nights in a row.
Seemed like more staff than guests and many many random local contractors walking around without name badges working on the painting, cobble stone walk ways, cleaning paths etc. Was not happy at how open and felt it lacked good security, just seemed less robust than at say Four Seasons.
At the gym every morning we were stared at openly whilst I was running on the runner, by contractors and staff as they went to work and found it very disconcerting and lacked privacy.

Resort Staff in restaurants, room service, gardens are truly amazing and try to ensure every need is met.
At times there was a lot of noise as staff talked and joked around in the restaurants.
The library is stunning - the best DVD collections and you hire them out free every day and play in room DVD and CD player. Library also had the latest magazines, books and internet which was painfully slow.
The Hotel limousine sedans are very old Mercedes Benz, & musty smell of old cars.
Shops in the complex had beautiful arts, clothes, also basic amenities and personal items for sale. The two swimming pools are very different. The larger pool was very cold and again bereft of any atmosphere. But some lovely large gazebo pool day beds. loads of towels, iced water, fresh pool menu. The pool attendants were outstanding. The smaller pool at the gym and by the rice paddies was smaller, more intimate and had some atmosphere. Dining was easy, you could get food from any restaurant at any time of day.
Taxi too and from hotel are very reliable, well priced and good way to get around.
If you get tired of markets, temples, and then chaos and noise that is so vibrant in Chiang Mai you can escape to a Shopping centre less than 10 minutes from the hotel called Promenada. Has excellent selection of restaurants, coffee cafes, clothes, shoes, electrical devices, hair dresser, mobile phone shops cinema with latest moves. To get a taxi back simply go to the Information desk and they will book you one.

Room Tip: Colonial Rooms are vast in selection. Some walk straight out onto the Pool area, others over look ga...

Absolutely phenomenal enormous hotel property, 60 acres of modern construction done in a traditional style with traditional materials. Seriously, the wood carving on the spa building alone is worth visiting this hotel. The whole place is beautifully built. Our guest villas was very comfortable, the common spaces are lavish, several good restaurants, great swimming pools. Very friendly and helpful staff too. The hotel's offered cooking class was particularly good.

The property is slightly out of central Chiang Mai, you need a taxi or driver to get into town for the markets, etc. But this is the kind of place you could happily spend several days and never leave, just enjoy the pool and the spa and a nice meal. Or go out for a few hours for a tour arranged by their terrific concierges.

We stayed just after New Year's and it felt a little quiet, but service was fantastic. I think getting out from Mandarin Oriental was a good choice for them, they're certainly running themselves just fine. Presumably they'll join a new hotel group for marketing purposes at some point but in the meantime quality is top rate.

Room Tip: The villas are truly amazing.

One of my best experience in Chiang mai. The room is huge and amazing. The restaurants are perfect, many choice of food. Breakfast is full with tasteful food. The best thing of all with this hotel is the beautiful smile from all of staff.. The never look angry and welcome you with all they can. That is so amazing for me. You must try the spa. It is very professional and perfect treatment. The treatment is good price with high quality. So Amazing time there.

stayed at colonial suites and was totally mesmerized by the beauty of the resort. you can easily spend 2 days just enjoying the resort, having meals at the different restaurants in the resort and the various activities the resort offers like padi plantation tour which is within resort premises.,
you should definitely have the high tea there and take the breakfast out on the terrace of the restaurant, enjoying the lake view. the service is great and staff is really friendly.

the only thing that the hotel management can do is to improve the quality of the toiletries that are kept in the bathrooms

when you check in you are driven to the room in a golf cart and you can call for one if y

If you are in Chiang Mai, do not miss out on the newly furbished Dhara Devi Hotel.

This luxe property is currently run by the owners and has made a substantial turn now that it no longer runs under the MO banner.

This has allowed the creative team to experiment with a whole new vision in the food and beverage context. The French restaurant Farang Ses boasts a Michelin star chef. There is an exceptional patisserie and new concepts have been successfully developed, which allow locals and visitors to sample delicious savories at the brand new tea salon.

A new Chinese chef has been brought in and the Thai restaurant serves an eclectic menu and many clever cocktails especially the Tom Yum Martini which is wickedly addictive.

For those who can afford the villas and colonial suites, unsurpassable hospitality awaits you but the highlight of this palace is the magical Horn Bar with genuine antiques and the lofty grounds with its magnificent trees.

Dhara Dhevi is like top 5 star hotels. You have the best rooms, the best restaurants, the best spa and fitness, etc but here you have as well the most beautiful place I have seen. The areas surrounding most of the villas are difficult to describe. It is like being in a movie.
