The Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai
Ranked #4 of 403 Hotels in Chiang Mai
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 20, 2011

After traveling via 4 flights from the east coast of the USA to Chiang Mai, the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi was chosen for our 1st two days/nights to recover from the 12 hour jet lag. Two colonial suite rooms were booked via the American Express Fine Hotel and Resorts program. Prior to our arrival in Chiang Mai, transportation was arranged for THB 1,650 for four people. Upon arrival at the hotel, my traveling party was greeted with local Thai flowers, cold towels and cold tea, and seated in the open air lobby for check-in. This was a very nice touch! We were upgraded to a two room villa, but settled instead on a one room vila and colonial deluxe suite.

The villa's are outstanding, as our one room villa had a plunge pool and steam shower. There was an Nespresso machine in the kitchen and bose stereo system in the living room. However, I especially enjoyed the outside rain forest shower which was part of the upstairs master bedroom. During our trip a member of Thai royal family was staying at the property.

The hotel offers 24 hour transportation via golf cart around the 60+ acre property 24 hours a day and will arrive within 5 minutes of contacting the operator for a ride. The included breakfast buffet (AmEx FHR) was outstanding. Service was top notch which is typical found in Mandarin Oriental asian properties.

The hotel is located 15 minutes from downtown Chiang Mai and has a shuttle service that runs daily. The shuttle for the night market leaves the hotel at 7:30pm and returns back at 10:30pm, but be sure to book in advance.

The only excessive charge was WiFi at THB 600 per day, which I believe should just be included in the rate. For THB 750 a SIM/micro SIM chip for 3GB of data can be purchased upon arrival at the Chiang Mai airport if you have an unlocked phone (i.e. iPhone) and the personal hot spot feature of iOS can be used for WiFi within the villa.

Finally, we took advantage of the $100 USD spa credit per room (AmEx FHR hotel amenity) and highly recommend the traditional Thai massage especially after traveling from the US. The spa is one of the finest in the world that I have experienced.

Room Tip: Book via American Express Fine Hotel and Resort program for room upgrade, $100 spa credit per stay p...

We have just spent five wonderful days at this magnificent resort and what we experienced was beyond any imagination. I don’t even know if the word resort is the right word to describe this place, as you feel your are in a palace of unseen beauty! We stayed in a Grand Deluxe Villa which was very luxurious and spacious with two hot tops, steam room and believe it or not, we even had our own piano. I would definitely recommend to book one of this Grand Deluxe Villas overlooking the rice paddies. The service in the entire resort is beyond anything you would expect from a five star resort and no wonder they were voted best service in the world by Conde Nast Traveler! Every single staff member greets you by name, stops what he or she is doing to greet you and every wish you have will be fulfilled immediately. We have been to Thailand various times and Thailand is known for his outstanding service with a smile, but the staff at this resort takes this reputation to a new level. They offer two very nice swimming pools, lots of activities, an amazing kids club and be rest assured you will not miss the ocean or beach for a single second as we originally thought. They are plenty of restaurants, whereby you can choose from Thai, Chinese and French and while we had tried all of them their chef is to praised for such high level of quality food. Don’t forget to order room service and enjoy a wonderful meal on the terrace of your villa overlooking the rice fields!

Dont forget to try the Spa, which of course is beyond expectations!!!

We will back as soon as possible and thank the Hotel Manager and his team for one of the most amazing times, we ever had in Thailand...

This Hotel and its staff is magical! The entire place has the ability to transfer every stress away and there is not much left but to smile back at all times.
Greg and Dominique, crudos to you and your team.
Accommodation is very luxurious and spacious, most technical apps are appreciated but rarely in use as there is so much to discover.
Besides discovering an amazing place this is the spot where celebrities hide.

We stayed in 2 connecting Colonial Suites in August and had a very relaxing stay. This resort is very special, something you will have not seen before. It is great for families with children and provides lots of space and comfort.

If Disney was to create an Asian experience, this would be it, but then this is real. If you are looking for a luxurious, different, cultural experience/surrounding, the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi is a good place to go.

We stayed for 5 nights and didn't venture much outside of the resort except for a trip to the Chiang Mai Night Zoo and a round of golf which we can both highly recommend.

The resort grounds are huge and you can have nice relaxing walks or use one of the hotel bikes to get around. Breakfast was good, as you would expect from a five star hotel but nothing too spectacular.

The Colonial Pool was lovely and very large and so was the Spa which is set in beautiful surroundings.

My daughter enjoyed the activities in the Kids Club which were centered around Thai culture which was nice and different. We also played tennis but found that the courts were not that well maintained.

The gym is very good and also offers some complimentary classes and activities for guests and I enjoyed doing the morning yoga class outdoors on the deck. There is an extensive list of weekly activities in the resort for guests of all ages and some activities were dedicated to teenagers which you don't often see.

Lunch at the pool bar was the only disappointing part, the service was slow and inconsistent and I think this is primarily because of the lack of English language skills of the team that runs this outlet.

We had dinner at all of the three main hotel restaurants. The Thai is very good and has live music and a Thai dance performance every evening which is also great for kids, the Chinese restaurant was ok, but we didn't have a wow experience and the French restaurant was very good so we went back twice for the great food and service.

We had afternoon tea at the Cake Shop which was a nice experience and our daughter loved the ice cream there as well.

All in all a lovely resort, expect western, five star hotel prices but truly enjoy the unique and spectacular setting and surroundings of this resort.

Room Tip: Colonial Suites 1-8 are right by the pool and close to the lobby & pool bar. We had connecting s...

To sit on a balcony of the Colonial Suites of Dhara Dhevi was to immerse oneself in a world of Northern Thai architecture and opulence at its height. Th golden spires and rooftops of the main building reach into the sky leaving one with a sense of wonder, almost disbelief. Bathed by the changing light each day, but somehow more glorious in the early morning or towards dusk, it leaves one moved by the beauty of a man's dream to build this amazing place. The many buildings in the complex are worth examining in detail as they are quite unique and even whimsical in their presentation. Fantastic creatures adorn the architecture everywhere and one is intrigued about their origin and the myth that surrounds them.
The staff at Dhara Dhevi are more than one can imagine. Every kindness is extended and offered to guests all of the time. Every comfort is available for the traveller, nothing seems to be forgotten. At every turn there is a smiling face, a greeting or an offer of assistance. How beautiful they are.
The suites are very large, extremely comfortable and beautifully decorated. It was a pleasure to sink into this luxury after a days outing.

The choice of restaurants is marvellous. Of course for me, it was the Thai restaurant that interested me most and I found the food superb, so ate there most nights to savour the unique flavour of this stunning food. The staff in these restaurants were impeccable and their knowledge of the cuisine excellent. They are passionate about their food and it becomes so evident in the food that is offered. Well I must admit I love Thai food.
I would say this stay was 8 days of bliss and I know anyone visiting Chang Mai would be charmed by this extraordinary hotel.
You would be right to assume I found this place a joy to stay at and I will most certainly return to enjoy the truly marvellous experiences it offers.

I visited the Mandarin Oriental Chiang Mai in June of 2011. The property itself is beautiful - almost a shrine itself. The people are friendly, and the accomodations are some that you would never see anywhere else - living in a house surrounded by a rice patty field?

I came with my 2 children, and we took a cooking class at the hotel which included a trip to the market, and then cooking 5 dishes ourselves. The 3 of us were the only ones in the class and the one-on-one interaction was great.

The concierge really made a difference. We had been hearing of the Patara Elephant Farm, where you are "elephant owner for the day", but it was full. My daughter was distraught, as this was the number one reason why she wanted to come to Thailand.

The concierge called us in the last minute on a cancellation due to the rain, and we got in. That experience with the elephants was a once in a lifetime thing. Simply amazing.

I had thought that our trip had ended on a bad note, as my son's wallet was missing upon our departure to the US.

How did management make the difference? Not only did they find the wallet, they converted the currency, transferred it to my bank account, and mailed back the wallet to my son. That, is the difference. Going above and beyond the call of duty.

Great people, great management, and a wonderful hotel with beautiful surroundings. Without a doubt, the best place to stay in Chiang Mai.
