“"It's Closing Time!"”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

We have visited Francesca's three times, and eaten there twice. Food is good, nothing special.

They advertise "Open until 10pm". The first time, we arrived at 9:00pm, and as soon as we received our starter the waitress started turning off the lights outside, near where we were sitting. As soon as the main course arrived we were brought the bill, without asking for it. When I asked why we were told they were closing soon, although it was only 9:20pm.

Because of this, we did not go back for over one year, but eventually were persuaded to give it another try by a friend who is a regular customer.

The second time, we arrived at 9:10pm, ordered the John Dory fish as a main course and were told "no fish tonight", so asked about an alternative special on the blackboard. The waitress said she did not know what it was, so went to fetch Luca, the Chef-Patron. He told us they DID have fish, but red mullet instead of John Dory. We ordered one, and one of the specials, along with a pizza to share to start. During our conversation I asked what time he closed, and was told 10pm. When I recounted the tale of our first visit, he said sometimes they turn off the lights early as the staff like to "get away on time", but he told us we could come at 9:30pm or even 9:45pm and if the lights were off, he would still be delighted to serve us.

The third time, a week later, we arrived at 8:50pm, the outside lights were still on and there were two large tales of diners. The waitress greeted us with "kitchen closed", to which we said Luca had told us to ask for him under such circumstances. Luca came out of the kitchen, and I repeated this, to which he replied "the kitchen is CLOSED".

At no time on the three occasions was the word "sorry" used by the owner or staff.

We announced we will not return, to which he said "OK", and we left.

With an attitude like this, "Closing Time" is something they really should take to heart, and recognise the hospitality business is not for them, and close the doors finally and forever.

Please do not waste your time going to Francesca's when there are so many good Italian restaurants in Chiang Mai happy to welcome customers until the time stated as closing time on their door, and then let them sit and enjoy their meal until they, not the staff, are ready to go home.

“A Real Italian Restaurant”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

Question. What do you call a restaurant that has a significant number of the local Italian community as customers? Answer - Pizzeria Francesca. If this in itself is not a recommendation, I don't know what is.

This is a great little restaurant, run by chef / patron Luca with help from his delightful (and very clever - she lectures at CMU) wife, with their staff. He is a man with a passion for food, preparing his pizza dough fresh each day and spending two hours on the preparation of his Bolognaise sauce. This is a favourite hang out for locals, both Thai and Ex-pat, and far superior to many of the Thai run "Italians" in the city. The pizzas are great and his lasagne brilliant.

All this with a happy and attentive staff, gentle Baroque music playing in the background and prices that are astonishingly reasonable. The surroundings are unpretentious, but the service is great and the food fantastic.
