“Incredible food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2014

We visited this gem of a restaurant twice in January. It tends to be busy so I recommend swinging by during the day to make dinner reservations for later in the week. The place is tiny - I don't think more than 20 people can fit inside - and basically a cute hole-in-the-wall in terms of decor. But the food-value combination is mind-boggling. You can totally feast here with two people, with some of the most amazing fresh curry in Chiang Mai, and your total bill is something like US $12. The owner is a very warm and nice young woman who treats you well. A must-visit restaurant!

“New Restaurant - Big Teething Problems”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2014

We turned up at the restaurant only to be sent, by the owner, to their new restaurant a few minutes away by tuk-tuk. The restaurant is on the ground floor of the BB Mantra Hotel and had apparently only been open about 5 days. The setting is quite nice, but as the restaurant was quite full, we were seated outside by the hotel pool at a very, very low table, more like a coffee table than a dining table. The other guests that were seated outside with us were seated at the pool furniture. The service was extremely slow, it took ages to be served. When we were finally served, the food came but we had no plates and no cutlery and we had to ask for them, even though the food was sitting on the table getting cold. There were no napkins on the table and none were offered, which made shelling prawns very messy, and anytime we wanted to get another drink, or anything else for that matter, we had to wait and wait. On the positive side, the food was quite good, but I wouldn't say exceptional. Would we eat there again...no!

“Not sure what the hype is about”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2014 via mobile

We lined up for 20 minutes with other people waiting for Cooking Love to open at 6pm only to have a party of 5 at the last minute walk straight up to the door and get in before everyone who had waited because they did not join the line. Not a good start. The restaurant is gorgeous, the service is friendly and efficient, but there is only 1 wok cooking food so dishes come out one at a time for the whole restaurant. It seems to seat about 24 people. This was our last meal before leaving Chiang Mai so we really wanted local authentic Thai food and we were disappointed. The stir fried spinach with oyster sauce was not the right spinach every other restaurant in Thailand serves and it has the same chicken stock/oyster sauce gravy that the chicken and cashew nut stir fry had which was also very different to all the other Thai dishes we have had of the same name. It was very western in its flavour. It was nice but not Thai. My husband had the young coconut curry served in the fresh coconut and it was bland and had very little spice, even though he asked for medium heat. My Khao soi was very nice and was the most authentic dish out of the ones we ordered. I have had 5 of these in the last 2 weeks and this was as good as the others I have enjoyed. Apparently I got the last Khao soi of the day and I ordered it at just after 6pm so they must only make a certain amount of it per day and when it is gone, it is gone.
In summary, I do not think this place is worth lining up for. The food is nice and cheap, but there are better places in the area for authentic Thai food.
