River View room overlooking the garden is a must. This was our favorite place in Thailand. Unpretentious, charming garden and great staff. Khun Dang is an excellent and generous host. The pool is just right and very relaxing. Breakfast is included with the room rate and they do much to make sure to cook to your tastes. We truly can't wait to return!

Room Tip: The river view rooms overlooking the garden are a must!

If you are looking for somewhere relaxed, quiet and comfortable but still just a walk away from all that Chiang Mai has to offer this is a great place to stay.
I stayed there a couple of times this trip and started each day with a lovely breakfast out in the garden by the river. My room was spacious, clean and comfortable - everything I needed, including wi-fi and a fridge.
The staff are knowledgable and helpful although there was never a hint of anyone trying to sell me a tours or day trip.
Definitely worth a stay.

Room Tip: I couldn't get a river view room but the one I got still had a nice view across the neighbours' gardens and rooftops

This is a lovely spacious place, with a truly beautiful hidden garden and swimming pool right on the river running through chiang Mai. It's wonderfully tucked away down an alley which provides a nice retreat from the occasional madness of chiang Mai. It's quite a walk to the old city, but it's easy to catch a red truck or tuk tuk, and it's very close to the night market which is quite a fun scene. We really liked our stay in this quiet spot, and the staff was very helpful when I fell sick for several days. The breakfast here is wonderful, but it's worth noting that there's no water boiler (for making tea) in the room and there's no way to get tea/coffee or anything other than water/beer/soda throughout the day or at night. This is a pity because it would be really nice to be able to drink tea or coffee in the beautiful garden, but that's obviously not a major complaint. This is a lovely spot to stay for a few days.

Like a long beloved coat, this property is nicely worn but actually burnished with considerable care and consideration. I was very happy to find it, its home-like comfort, clean rooms, attentive and friendly service, and wonderful garden still in business since my last visit 20+ years ago. For people who do not need to revisit the bustle of Chiang Mai inner city again, or are just travel weary after the past 4-5 weeks of being on the road, its clean and comfortable if modest rooms, quiet reserve, nice pool, deck verandah and very pleasantly abundant garden beside the river are very welcoming at a good value. River facing rooms are preferred, with their own balconies overlooking the garden. One can feel comfortable rambling around the many books left by previous travelers, the honor system help-yourself drinks cooler, good wi-fi, and breakfast with the birds in the garden. One can walk to any excitement or spas they may want easily as the night market and abundant food locations are a few minutes' walk away, but also quite out of earshot. Perhaps the jumble of stored artifacts can be dusted off or relegated to a side room, but otherwise the property's lived-in qualities makes one feel comfortably "at home", easily relaxing for a few days.

Room Tip: River-facing, over-looking the garden, with a balcony

Okay, before I start writing MY review I just want to clear a little bit up about what has been said by those who have given poor reviews...I have noticed that all the poor reviews are from several years ago and from what I've experienced at this hotel in December 2014... a LOT has changed - for the better!

The accommodation is simple and in standard condition. It's simple accommodation but exceptionally clean with beautiful displays such as artwork on the walls which look very aesthetically pleasing to the eye at first sight.

The bathroom is a little out - dated but very clean. The view from the room looks so tranquil; now let me start on the garden! The garden is exquisite and in EXCELLENT condition...words can't even describe how beautiful it is...it's definitely the place to visit for those who love amazing gardens. The owner has put her heart and soul into the garden and Thai artwork on display.

The service at the River View Lodge is really good. Everyone is so warm - hearted and friendly whenever you come to reception to collect your keys or whenever you come down to breakfast.

This is definitely a unique place to stay at and I highly doubt you will find another place in Chiang Mai just like it. If I could rate this place 6 stars, I would...I'm hoping that whoever reads this gets the jist of what I am saying. Definitely worth visiting.

Room Tip: Choose the views facing the garden on the balcony...as someone else said it does cost a little more and the other views from the other rooms are still nice but it is definitely worth it.
