For anyone travelling on a budget (i.e. not just flown in with the louis vuittons from US/UK) this is one of the best guest houses we stayed in in Thailand. The rooms were clean, the service way above average even for the friendly Thais and the location ideal for exploration but with a peaceful feel to the place. The little restaurant cooks up above average food at OK prices. We avoided paying over the odds for the drinks though. Sitting on the Terrace at night the only sounds to disturb us were the chirps from the local wildlife. I agree, if you want a hotel, with shiny floors and sterile multinational interiors don't stay here; otherwise highly recommended.

For a simple guesthouse on the river, the Galare is not bad. We spent one night there and pulling up in the taxi is was definitely the cutest of several we passed with Thai architecture and a riverfront restaurant. For US $26, perfect.

For all the complaints I read, people, this is a guesthouse. It isn't luxurious, it is rustic. It's in a little neighborhood and kids are playing the street, which gets a little noise. Yes, there are ants in the bathroom, bring flip flops. There are also handmade soaps at the sink, which is a nice touch. The AC works and complimentary water in the fridge. The garden is peaceful, but the chairs and "furniture" is run down.

Unfortunately we woke up at 4am to a bunch of kids (local or guests we aren't sure) pulling on our door and running through the hall. We spent the next night at the D2.

Having used tripadvisor as my main source of travel recommendations, I originally booked a 3 night's stay at the Galare Guest house. With all the good reviews I assumed the Galare Guest house to be a very superior guest house comparable to a hotel. At least the rates they charge compare to hotel rates.
Having arrived at the Galare guest house, I was warmly welcomed. I received my room key and a small introduction to the place. The key was attached to a huge wooden elephant, which was rather unhandy.
The room itself was rather tiny and wasn't very nicely furnished. Further it was very dark due to lack of windows. The two small windows have been covered with close meshed mosquito nets. The two single beds (I travelled alone and booked a single room.) were very uncomfortable. The mattresses were extremely soft and did not offer any comfort. The air condition has only been available in the main room but not the bathroom (Anyhow the air condition was very noisy.). In the bathroom the temperature was rather high. The bathroom's window couldn't be closed and had to stay open, which didn't boost my feeling of security.
Having stayed at this very uncomfortable and uncomforting place for an hour, I decided to check out and find myself a decent place to stay. The rate the Galare guest house is charging really compares to a 4 star hotel rate, but at least the room I was given did not even come close to the worst 4 star hotel room I've stayed in.

The Galare Guest House is located on the banks of the Mae Ping River with the Night Markets only streets away and a little further to the walls of the old city.
Situated down a small lane there is very little noise. The view to the river from the open air dining area is nothing to write home about, however it is better than looking out onto crowded streets, alleyways or the side of another building.
There is also a nice grassed garden area to relax in.
The room had a king size bed (great) and a good small bathroom. It was fitted with a/c and a fan and plenty of hot water at good pressure. Also included is a small TV with satellite connection and a small fridge.
The food was good, however choice was limited.
Staff are extremely helpful and polite.
Double rooms cost 1050 Baht per night, and at this price with the quality of accomodation and location there were certainly no complaints. You can get cheaper rooms elsewhere - but not the quality. You can get the quality elsewhere, but not at this price.
If you expect a "Hyatt" or "Holiday Inn" then go to them and miss the enjoyment and character of a small establishment.
The main owner of this property died in Jan 06, so hopefully his family will be able to keep the business running and meeting the cureent standards.

After reading the reviews of the Galare we decided to book the hotel for a 3 night stay. The hotel is fairly quiet with very basic accomodation, Im confused as to the
"hype" of this hotel. It was just standard accomodation at a fair price, next time would try another hotel.

We just returned from thailand and relied heavily on other reviews for where to stay etc...We were really looking forward to the galare guest house as the reviews were fantastic for the most part - have to say we were extremely disappointed. The accomadations are NOT roomy, in fact they are fairly cramped compared to other places we've stayed and everything is really basic - we booked thru the guest house itself and paid about 20usd / night and onced we arrived in chaing mai and met a tour operator we saw the light! She booked us in a beautiful 4 star hotel called Raming lodge for 2 dollars more a night INCLUDING a wonderful breakfast and the location was 3 minutaes from the night bazaar -much better location than galare. In addition, it was quiet! at galare, we listened to dogs bark all night and people talk - extremely frustrating - they were nice enough to spray the ants in the room which i suppose is a bonus. Bottem line you can get much better value for your money elsewhere. The tour person we used was in between the nigt bazaar and raming lodge and her name is Ning Nong - she operates Changmai Jocky tours and the sign out side says something like international flights and tours...FANTASTIC tour opeorator!!!
hope this helps.

This place has its pros and cons. It does have a beautiful courtyard and it's right by the river. The architecture is nostalgic which is nice. I was okay with our room as it was noisy. You can hear people slamming doors and dog fights from the street at night(albeit interesting). If you're sensitive to mosquito bites then look out. I was attacked by the mosquitos and woke up with quite a few bites. Probably because the room had no screen door. The bathroom is very basic and may have some plumbing issues. This guest house is quite affordable but beware this is very much a no frills place.
