Chiang Mai is one of our favorite cities - we try to go there once a year. For the past four or five years, we've stayed at a great little guest house that is conveniently located near the Night Market, yet seems like it is miles away from the noise & traffic. It's located right on the Ping River, and has lots of greenery and flowers. There are about 35 rooms - they're very comfortable, though not "high style". All the rooms have tvs, fridges and a/c; some of the rooms have (reasonably-priced) broadband. They have an excellent, inexpensive restaurant located on the riverside. They also run tours to various tourist attractions in the area - we haven't taken one, but our friends did, and they were very satisfied. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. It's a family-run place and they've been in business for decades. It seems like most of the people who stay there have been there multiple times (like us). It seems to fill up almost every night in the high season, so book ahead to be sure to get a room (you can book with them online). And, on top of this all, it is very inexpensive.

The Galare was very well placed to the night market. It is at the end of a quiet lane with some pleasant outdoor areas attached. It is a family run business, they are clean efficient and friendly. The dining area is next to the river, the food is plentiful and cheap. The rooms are basic, but OK.
We moved after two nights to the "Riverview" next door which was more upmarket but the staff were distant and we moved back to the Galare which was somehow more relaxed and friendly. The a/c is quite noisy but efficient and is useful for blocking out 'night noises.'
There is a taxi service directly opposite the gate and 'Sopin' the friendly driver speaks quite good English and is a fountain of knowledge. He can be hired for a few hours at reasonable rates for tours etc....often much cheaper to do it that way than to go on organised tours. We had a pleasant stay and will look forward to staying there again.

The Galare Guest House is a gem in Chiang Mai. My friend and I stayed there in January 2005 and really enjoyed it. The location is great, by the river and a short walk to town and the night market. The staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating. The rooms are basic, but have everything you need. The restaurant serves great food at great prices. The Galare has a real charm and peacefulness about it that big hotels just don't have.

We stayed here in March 2004 and this place was definitely one of the best we stayed in, in Thailand. It's very clean with good-sized rooms. The staff were extremely friendly and the laundry service was definitely a plus. It's just a few minutes walk from the Bazaar. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I've just returned from a wonderful first-time trip to Thailand. I was in Chiang Mai for a week and found the Galare Guest House to be an ideal base for me. The front desk staff was always friendly and eager to help (laundry, mending-incredible prices), the restaurant was relaxing (nice "river watching") and delicious, and the on-site travel assistants (Mr. Paitoon, his wife, and others) were knowledgeable and professional with any arrangements they helped me with. Mr. Paitoon, especially, helped to create a custom trip for my travel to Mae Hong Son as I didn't want the "tourist bus" programs that are available in most of the hard sell travel agencies in town. The rooms are clean and simply adorned with Asian/Thai decor and hot water was always available (I learned this was not so in a very popular nearby guesthouse). The location of the Galare provided easy access to the night bazaar markets, the lovely flower market, and neighbood strolls. I will stay at the Galare during my next visit to Chiang Mai.

Galare guest house represents the Thailand of 20,30 years ago. Old fashioned hospitality, less than 40 rooms, low buildings, inexpensive and quiet. I love the ambiance and the location. it is like a little world unto itself surrounded by trees and alongside the river. Your morning breakfast is taken in the restaurant alonside the river. It is a 5 minute walk down small streets to the exciting Night Bazaar and there is a tailor across the street from the alley that has made me two pairs of silk PJ's for 10 dollars. I have stayed there three times 1996,2000 and 2003 and never been disappointed. We would leave our packs while trekking elsewhere in Northern Thailand and never had a problem. However, if you are a luxury man or woman who loves all the typical modern amenities to be found in a modern hotel, this is not the place for you. They have very clean rooms with private showers and hot and cold water but this is definitely what some people would condider downmarket. Personally, I love it.
