“Nice Place to Stay in Chiang Mai”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2006

4 of us just back from our short holiday trip to Chiang Mai from 21Sep-24Sep2006 and we did the right choice of putting up at Tamarind Village. It was a courtyard style resort with some colonial touch in their architecture finishing. Very helpful staff there but not that friendly and you need to go to the right staff who could assist you in your enquiry.Their tour service to Doi Suthep & Bor Sang shopping tour as put up at the reception board is quite expensive on a per person basis and for a fraction of the price you can get a taxi to do this trip. Our trip to Doi Suthep in a taxi for 4 cost only THB400 & an additional of THB300 will take you to Bor Sang (Umbrella, Celadon & Silk factory) & the driver also take you to Wat Pra Singh & Wat Suan Dok....how's that for a bargain compare to the resort price of THB700 per person to Doi Suthep. Anyway in a taxi, there is no air cond & lunch and expect some bumby ride but if you enjoy it, why not and save the money for shopping & perhaps spa too.....

The airport transfer by the resort is also expensive which cost THB177 per person and for 4 person it would be THB708 whereas we called a meter taxi and it cost us THB150 for 4 of us.. so another savings.... : )

Overall, the resort is unique in its style and the breakfast is good and we had more than enough and it is alo within walking distance ( if you have the energy) to some place of interests.

Strongly recommend to those seeking a change in staying a warm & cosy resort and we will definitely come back....

From all of us in Penang, Malaysia

First time in Chiang Mai and am I glad I chose Tamarind. Top location in the old city but what impressed me the most was the genuine, sincere friendliness of the staff. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Excellent restaurant as well. It's an often used phrase but Tamaring really is an oasis in the busy city.

I really miss this place, after staying in some cold impersonal western style hotels in my time,Tamarind village really makes you feel at home, the place has a really peaceful temple -like retreat feel to it..The bungalow style rooms have doors which open up onto the verandah where you can relax overlooking a garden. The rooms are comfortable, decorated in neutral modern tones, the beds are nice and comfy. The breakfast was excellent , overlooking the pool which is nice and clean with excellent service We were picked up from the airport by friendly staff, who really went out of there way for us as when we left I accidentely left a piece of luggage at reception, the hotel phoned the driver on his mobile who immediately turned the bus went back for it and still got us to the airport on time with a smile. It is only a tuk tuk ride away fom all the night bazaar action but it is much nicer to stay in a quieter part of town. They also gave us brilliant restaurant advice. I will definetly stay here again

I stayed in this resort for 11 nights this summer, I planned to stay for 5 nights before but decided to extend my stay upon arrival.

Cos I've been to Chiang Mai many times and this resort is in the city center, I was afraid that I will be disturbed by the sound of motor-byc at all times; actually I heard nothing but birds's singing and wind's whispering !

Staffs are helpful and friendly, absolutely no discrimination to Asian (it happened in some resorts in Thailand and Thai Airways). I asked for sewing kit and bottle opener, was send to my room in minutes. Clean rooms with everything I need, many channels on TV, good restaurant with good food and service. Nice and clean pool (just don't like that many guests smoke by the pool)

Will stay there again in my next visit in October.

Staying in Chaing Mai we went to our trusty Fodor Book and looked through for a hotel. We ended up getting an on the spot reservation at the Tamarind Village. It is in the city itself, vs larger resorts like the 4 seasons and that seemed to fit our needs. We fell in love. Although it is centrally located it has a long driveway with towering bamboo on either side that make you feel like you are entering a hidden oasis. You are. The rooms are rustic chic but wonderful and the bedding was the most comfortable I have ever slept on- we thought about buying a set of their pillows at the very least. A buffet breakfast is included and was our first introduction to many wonderful thai fruits. They also offered Pad thai, eggs, etc. The pool was beautiful and well thought out and often had a traditional thai musician playing next to it. All of this and I havent even mentioned Rabbit (the concierge). She booked, guided, and encouraged all of our adventures and even helped us book our next lodging after we were checked out. Needless to say we are big Rabbit and Tamarind Village fans. Enjoy.

Spent four nights in June staying with 3 youngish children. This is a boutique hotel in the old part of the city. It is excellent value for money! The setting of the hotel gives a quiet ambience, with lush vegetation. The decor in the main restaurant /foyor is tasteful and stylish. Location is good within walking distance to many temples and shopping. Tut-tuts are cheap to any location.
Had a deluxe room ( but not sure what the difference was between deluxe and superior -maybe the small balcony provided in the deluxe). Room were as expected but as previously mentioned in reviews on the dark side- furnishings were fine and the room size /bathroom size were above average. The pool was good - although it was difficult to get a lounge chair at times. Breakfast was ample with a good selection available and service was attentive.
Although the children loved it ( they are very seasoned travellers)it is probably not a good choice for families. My children were the only ones there during our stay and I was a little concerned when they were using the pool that they were distrubing the quietness of the place.
Why we liked this hotel - it tries hard to deliver, its quiet ambience and best of all it was great value for money.
