Hug collection
First and foremost this place is not a hotel but a hostel marketed as a hotel. As a hostel, it is not bad in its offerings. What I had the biggest problem with is feeling ripped off and charged hotel prices for a hostel. We paid about 4000 baht for a night through Expedia with their discount of 40% however this place is really not worth more than 1000 baht in my opinion compared to other places in Chiang Mai. I have no issue with staying at a hostel but do have an issue with getting charged so much. I just think this place was trying to be more than it was ... Trying to be trendy but was tacky, trying to be upscale but lacked the amenities and staff with any business acumen however the staff were very nice and have no complaints about their politeness. The biggest drawback of this place was the noise of the street which made if very difficult to sleep. In the end we had booked (prepaid) for 5 nights but walked away after 3 nights and found a place for half the price, double the amenities, extremely quiet and just a couple block from the old city.

As noted by recent other review this place has recently changes its name. Old reviews must be read. I did not know of the name change when we booked and found out the day we checked in. I strongly suspect the really good reviews through late 2013 are crafted by either owners or staff. They are too good to be true and I was taken in. Just do your research better than I did.

In summary

Value - terrible

Location - bad (on and busy street - earplugs and a pillow on head was only way to get some sleep) also located too far from old city to enjoy by walking. The good - located close to Nimman area with a few good blocks of shopping and food. Close to university so certainly frequented by a younger crowd. But really lacks the access to the old world feel that we were going to Chiang Mai to experience.

Room - okay but as mentioned trying to be trendy but in end just tacky. Bed was a little softer than the typical hard Thai bed so that was a bonus.

Breakfast - okay but limited to three options and you are forced to pick a time for breakfast so arrive early or too late and you may have problems, options include western, Chinese and Thai.

Staff - very good just need some for experience and some real experience in a hotel if they truly want to make this place transition to a hotel. They won't be able to do anything about the noise but there is potential but not at the prices they want or are charging.

Room Tip: If you stay try to get 4th floor and off the street.

This hotel had an excellent location for us. It is one block from the main pub scene in Chiang Mai, and 20 minute walk from the center of the old town (or a cheap cab ride). It is also slightly on the way out of town which is excellent for tour pick ups; you are in the easy zone for pick ups and you are usually picked up last and dropped off first which gives you less car time and more relaxing time. This is really handy when it's 7, you're dirty, hungry and just want to get out of a van. There are plenty of delicious restaurants and pubs down the street (both local food and western if you need a break).

Beds are huge and comfortable, room is sizable with nice amenities. Thai breakfast was delicious (much better than the other options). The clientele tends towards families and young professionals, so it is quieter but with interesting people if you're friendly.

We were very happy with the service as well. We had them book a trip on ATVs one day before we wanted to go, but our choice was fully booked. They did some digging while we considered our options and found us another, excellent, place to do the same thing for cheaper. There weren't any hidden fees, and they were just happy to help.

It does have the look of a hostel–common spaces, funky decor (they have a major hat theme going on), stairs not elevators, concrete flooring–but it is high quality, with giant rooms and lovely bathrooms. If the floors were hardwood people would call it a boutique hotel and pay twice as much for it (imo). The rooms are huge and have great light from the windows. Common spaces are nice if you're feeling social in the evening. It feels open and relaxing.

We were extremely happy with our stay.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors have less noise, but even the smallest rooms feel huge.

we spent 3 nights in hug collection and were excited about it because of the lot of amazing reviews. fact is... the hostel (i cannot call it hotel) looks great and is fine. but i expect much more from an accommodation in thailand that costs almost 100$ per night (with 65% discount). everything is ok but nothing is great except the bed that is amazing... one of the best i ever had. for the rest... really noisy street, personal with an attitude, not 100% clean (i'm swiss i know i know... we are never happy with that abroad) and only 3 breakfast choices. last but not least... 1 full day the power was off which means no way to take a warm shower, have the included breakfast, to charge our phones, ... and the only apologise was "sorry". i would at least expect a drink or something that shows they are really sorry. would i come back here again? no... but only because i like to try new locations.

Okay, I think it's important to start by saying this hotel changed its name in the last 12 months (very conveniently), it would seem as the previous reviews can be found here:-

http://www.tripadvisor.com.my/Hotel_Review-g293917-d2043814-Reviews-H_Unique_Bed_Breakfast-Chiang_Mai.html

These reviews are still very relevant in my opinion and if we'd have read these before we booked, we would have chosen a different hotel.

Let's be clear, it's not a hotel. It's a hostal, run by students and young travellers making a bit of pocket money. Lovely kids - but haven't got the foggiest about running a business. It's trying to be a funky boutique hotel but its been done on the cheap. Paint job in the rooms definitely been done by budding student artists and not professional painters.

The positives

Friendly staff

The negatives

Cost - we paid £77 per night in high season. Could have got better for less in hindsight.
Location - quite a walk from the main shopping, restaurant and drinking area to the south east of the city. It's also on a run down street
Shower - was only ever luke warm during our three night stay despite me raising this with reception and one of the kids trying to fix it.
Noisy - noise from the main road close by is very distracting to a quiet nights sleep

Again, if I had my time again I would probably choose the Princess Hotel in the centre of town, much better location. This place should clearly state it is a hostal and adjust prices accordingly.
