My friends and I did the morning class at Pantawan Cooking school. As we love cooking so much, we took multiple cooking classes at different cooking school in Chiang Mai, and this is really the best one comparing to others that have higher ranks.

As the program of the cooking class is pretty much in the same direction, but they way we felt about this place was waaay different.
The service they provide was superb. Tawan explained about the differences of thai herbs and ingredients that we will be using in the class. He speaks perfect English and was very funny.

After the market which was on the way to the school, we have arrived to Pantawan Cooking. The place was really beautiful, stunning! We felt like we are in a small resort but it is just a cooking school.

The menu they have were unlike others that you can choose the simple dishes and cook in different groups.
Here, it was a set menu and different each day. We did the Northern Food and we love it! It was very unique and we never have tried them before. The chef was hilarious. Overall, It was very fun and knowledgable.

The price here is a little more expensive than others, but again they are wayy better and much nicer than others. We think it worth every Baht!

If you are looking for a great time, nice ambience and meet great people.
I would really recommend Pantawan Cooking School.

my wife and i love to cook, and cook almost every night of the week. when we planned our honeymoon to thailand, we both agreed a cooking class is a must. as it is, i prefer to travel through my stomach rather than strictly sightseeing. one of the best features of the class was the market trip--when i was in india i visited markets myself but didnt have a guide describing flavors, how to pick out certain items nor what those items tasted like. Tawan was very knowledgeable not only with regional items, but in the different names that the same ingredients have region to region. then we arrive at the school. beautifully architected wood structure tucked outside the main city. it is amazing that they are taking a "farm to kitchen" approach by growing their own vegetables, fruits and raising geese and chickens. The instruction was quite strategic, rather than simply "do it this way because i say so" which is helpful in remembering why or how to do something as well as allowing one to explore options once cooking the dish yourself. we ended up having a great time with delicious food and highly recommend cooks of all skills to try it out. if you have special diet needs (my wife is a vegetarian) or are worried about skill levels, just let the team know ahead of time and theyll be more than happy to accomodate.

This was such a fantastic experience. As self-confessed foodies and wannabe masterchefs, we were really impressed by the overall experience at Pantawan.

We were picked up promptly from our hotel and were lucky enough to be the only ones booked into the tour for the day. The tour guide spoke really good English and had a beautiful and pleasant attitude. (Although I don't think I've met a Thai that doesn't!)

The trip to the market gave us a realistic insight into how the locals get their produce. Avoid going into the meat section if you're a vegetarian, as its pretty eye opening, and I like meat! The tour guide treats you to some local snacks - which I urge you to try - before continuing on the journey towards the cooking class venue.

Ahhhh the venue... It is simply divine. So tranquil, relaxing, clean and modern. I would have no issues cooking there every day!

On our menu was traditional Thai favourites: spring rolls, mussaman curry, chicken and cashew nut & pad thai.

We were given a cooking demonstration followed by a turn at cooking the dish ourselves. We did it dish by dish so the steps were easy to remember. Directions were clear, ingredients were fresh and equipment was of the highest standard.

After making our 4 dishes, we got to sit down to the feast we'd prepared and enjoyed the delicious food. The best part... beer was included!

Useful tips:
The only thing we were a little disappointed about was the fact we didn't get to see the curry pastes being made from scratch. I understand that often these pastes take hours to prepare but I would have really like to have seen the processes gone through to achieve the end product.
Perhaps an improvement could be if they had a paste they prepared earlier to use in the cooking for that day, but then had all the ingredients for you to make the paste there and then to see how it's done.

Otherwise this activity was fantastic value for money, we tasted really authentic Thai food, and if you ask nicely, they might even email you a couple of secret recipes ;)

Dear The VirginVoyager,

Greeting from Pantawan Cooking!

Thank you so much for you visit and we are very delighted to know that you had a great time with us here!

We would like to apologize for the case of curry paste that you didn't get to see the making process. The process would take about 20-30 mins, as we have limited of time due to it is the half day program, we would not feel like to rush you. We would like you to have a great dinning time; enjoying your own food and the ambiance.

However, we really appreciate your advise and surely that making the curry paste will be on the program from now on.

With Warm Regards,
Tawan

I went to Pantawan cooking school with some friends in March this year. We wanted to get a nice and tasty glimpse of the traditional Thai dishes but without having to be a grade A chef. This was exactly what Pantawan Cooking offered us! The hostess, Pailin picked us up from our hostel and she truly was a charm. Her English is perfect and she even showed us a bit around the town whilst driving to the school. We started by learning a bit about traditional ingredients and soon after we had to get down and dirty by chopping up all the veggies for the pad thai. Pailin helped us through all the stages of the process and answered every question we had. Because of her clear English and slow explaining, every part was crystal clear. The result was an (almost) genuine Thai meal that tasted a lot better than i thought i could cook. Thanks again Pailin!!!

Be prepared to be enveloped by the most lovely group of people!! My fiancé and I were picked up at our hotel by Pan and her best friend Yuri. We giggled and chatted the entire drive to the market. Tawan met us at the market, and taught us about local shopping with great passion and pride for his country and its food. Then, we went to the cooking class, where Pan's mother taught us several dishes, as we laughed, told stories, and spent a wonderful evening together. These are generous, hilarious people you want to know, and it's a perfect way to understand Thai culture. Enveloped by family! Plus, the food was DELICIOUS!!! Go--and enjoy! And tell those darlings Josh and Hallie say สวัสดี!!! :)
