Exploring the brand new wing of Kantary Terrace, we discovered La Tavernetta, a very attractive and modern Italian restaurant on the third floor. Danilo Ragusa, the owner and chef, has worked in the kitchens of Michelin two-star restaurants in Italy, and he is charming and passionate about his food. We have now had two meals at La Tavernetta and can report that it is truly a world-class restaurant. This is not a place that serves pizza and spaghetti. Instead, we chose between two set menus, each containing five courses, starting with a truly exceptional assortment of Italian cheeses and ending with dessert and Italian coffee. The highlights from our two meals included an amazing ceviche of tuna with orange and lemon zest, fusilli with pesto sauce prepared as we watched the chef at his pasta machine, salmon with crunchy flakes of smoked sea salt, homemade pistachio bun, eggplant and mushrooms in extra virgin olive oil, and the most delicious, rich, and silky panna cotta I have ever eaten.
La Tavernetta offers European food at an international standard that you almost never find in Thailand. It is far and away the best non-Asian food I have ever eaten in Chiangmai. The price is high but not unreasonable and reflects the chef’s commitment to using the very best, mostly imported ingredients. The five-course dinners totaled either 1,900 baht or 2,100 baht depending on the option selected, which is actually inexpensive compared to what one would pay for a similar meal in Europe or North America. Eating at La Tavernetta was a unique and truly memorable experience. Highly recommended.
