“Wonderful place to stay”
Reviewed July 8, 2014

I've waited way too long to leave this review but I finally got around to it. We stayed in June of 2013 for part of our honeymoon trip to Thailand. The stay was wonderful. The grounds and the bungalo itself is so unique and beautiful. Jaa and Paul were wonderful hosts and we still talk about the food that we were served (So good that I think Thai food has been ruined for us in the States!) I recommend staying here if you find yourself in Chiang Mai!

Room Tip: All of the rooms were great. We stayed in the Pink House.

Friends recommended this place to us, because we were looking for a quiet and cosy place to stay in Chinag Mai. We booked for one week, but we extended to almost 2 weeks. I knew chiang mai already and had seen some of the touristy stuff, therefore I was only looking for a place to relax and feel homy and found it! This place is perfect if you dont want to hang out where the tourist are (15-20 mins away from the city center), is very green, has chickens and ducks and even a horse and a bunch of dogs =) If you want to stay there I would recommend to hire a Motorbike, the tourist attractions are easy to reach with it and same as the restaurants ( real Thai food, no tourists, just locals) and if you want to train some Muay Thai, its only 20 mins away with the bike and easy to reach.
Paul, Ja and the 9 dogs are the heart of this place and very helpful with any information you need. Saying good bye was very hard for us, but we have a lot of beautiful memories now.

Other reviews have said it well, so I don't need to repeat, but this place is a delight in every way. My family spent two very happy weeks here in the Bluehouse. The children loved the breakfasts, their Thai bathroom, and exploring the grounds. Paul and Ja are very warm hosts. Our family is already talking about when we can come back and stay here again.

We absolutely loved this little oasis in Chiang Mai. Paul, Jaa and all the lovely dogs have really made a special retreat. Our Fez room was very clean, spacious with all you need, including a rooftop area for afternoon chill outs!
We just loved hanging out I the main area, Jaa's mum along with Jaa and Paul have collected some amazing and eclectic pieces that you can spend quite some time admiring.
However, the thing we admired most (so much so, we booked another night!!) was the food! Jaa is a pastry chef so you know desert will definitely be a winner! Dinner was a mixture of local fresh ingredients made into a few dishes that represented food you most likely hadn't tried in your Northern Thailand experience. The flavours were spot on and I still think of a particular curry with pork belly that we ate. YUM!
Do not be worried about the distance- having a motorbike and gps on google maps it was not hard to find and even though it looks a way out of CM, it only took us 15 mins.
Really a highlight of our 3 week trip in Northern Thailand.

Overview:

This is a great place to stay if you are enjoy off-beat vacation destinations and personalized experiences.

Location:

The resort is about a 15 minute motorbike ride from the city center. We loved it because it was far away from the tourism crazy of the city and we enjoy being far away from the tourism mania of Chiang Mai.

The spot:

The resort feels like you are living at somebody's big house because, well, you are staying at somebody's big house. The owners of the hotel live on site. They've got several pet dogs that hang out, and they are often hanging out in the lobby area working on their projects and often hanging out with the guests. When you stay there you get hybridized as a guest and a friend at the same time. If you like that idea, you'll love this place.

The hosts:

Paul and Ja are a married couple that own and operate the place. Paul is British and Ja is Thai (the met in the UK during university I think.) Now, they live in Chiang Mai. Ja also runs a very popular bakery (definitely get the carrot cake) and Paul works on several other side businesses. When we were there he told us he was getting a photo tour set up. (Paul is a professional photographer.)

Follow the recommendations:

Definitely ask Paul or Ja for food and activity recommendations. We wanted to go running and Paul suggested we go to this lake in the North West. It was awesome, and there is noway we would have found it had he not told us about it. Ja recommended a great little food spot that we loved.

Bakery:

Ja runs a bakery on the site. She's an awesome baker. Go there. Get the carrot cake or the chocolate brownie. It's good.

The Fire and the Food

They've got a fire pit out back, and in the evenings we hung out there and it was really cool. Ja's mom cooked some amazing food. It was the best food we had in Chiang Mai.

Other guests:

We met a couple of other guests at the hotel and they were all quirky/artistic/personable people that when you meet you think: "yeah I'd hang with them." I got the sense they have a revolving cast of cool customers coming in and out all the time. It's a nice perk if you like to meet interesting people while you travel.

Motorbike:

You won't want to hang out there all the time. You can rent a motorbike for 200 baht per day. Do that. Paul arranged it for us.

Summary:

it's a great spot. Book for a day and check it out. You'll probably want to stay longer.

Room Tip: Definitely get a motorbike. Definitely order the carrot cake. Definitely arrange to have a h...

This is one of the best places we have ever stayed at during a vacation. Such a quaint, gorgeous property.... and each of he bungalows on the property are so thoughtfully designed and well decorated. We loved our stay at the PInk House. Jaa and Paul were excellent hosts and it almost felt like we were visiting friends. Once they learned that we were looking for a sort of off-the-grid experience, they recommended some restaurants, markets and wats to us which we would not have known about otherwise... it made our trip all the more memorable. We loved hanging out each evening in the lounge area... again such a great idea to have that space. We ate in one of the nights and it was hands down, one of the most memorable meals of our trip. Since we got back, we have been recommending Ruang Tawan Hideaway to anyone contemplating a trip to Chiang Mai. We certainly intend to be back!

Ja and Paul were incredible hosts and the pictures merely hint at how beautiful this property really is. We stayed 3 nights in the Fez room, which was spacious, colorful and cozy all at the same time. The grounds are a bit of a hike from town, but Ja will organize a taxi to pick you up, or you can hire a driver for the whole day (we even shared with new friends we met at Ruang Tawan). Staying here makes you not really want to leave, with a bar, massage, cafe and restaurant all on site, plus a beautiful lounge with sofas and wifi. Great place to unwind and meet other interesting travelers or chat with the fabulous hosts. This is the kind of place where you feel like you are staying with extended family or friends rather than in a hotel. I was sick one day and Paul took me in to the pharmacy to get some medicine and Ja helped with translation. Ja is also a fabulous baker and cook - she makes possibly the best chocolate croissants in all of Thailand and just thinking about her wheat-free passionfruit cake makes me want to start planning my next trip back.

Room Tip: They are all amazing and unique in their own way
