Description: Brown Rice has just opened in the restaurant at 85/5 Samlann road Tumbol Phra singha in Chiang Mai. It is an all vegetarian restaurant, specialising in thai food, but also serves several western dishes. It is run by the fantastic Duang, a thai 'masterchef' who has written many cookery books and has appeared on thai tv cooking channels.Business hour.11.00 a.m.-21.00p.m. Close on Wednesday. All our food is freshly prepared and cooked with love. Our dishes are special and from the heart so sometimes they might take a little while. Please be patient and we will serve you as quickly as we can.

“Looking for Inventive Thai Vegetarian Cuisine? Look No Further!”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

After several days in Chiang Mai sampling some surprisingly unremarkable vegetarian offerings, finding Brown Rice restaurant was a breath (or perhaps I mean mouthful) of fresh air. Like another reviewer, the minute we tasted his fresh spring rolls, garlic fried mushrooms and crispy tofu salad, we knew we'd be back. On subsequent visits we sampled the (Penang-style) red curry, the yummy Mussaman, the green curry and also stir-fried tofu and vegies. All the flavours were exquisite and the vegetables beautifully cooked.

Service is friendly, but can be quite slow - however, hopefully this is sonething that can be sorted out, as the food is definitely worth the wait.

On two occasions when we visited, there were also local Thais eating at the restaurant - another good sign! The chef also came out to take our order and talk to us - his passion for good food and Vegetarianism is obvious.

Note that this premises will be closing down at the end of September and re-opening in another nearby location (with Health Food Store) shortly afterwards. We wish him the best of luck - as with the launch of the English-language version of his cookbook - his food is too good to miss.

“Delicious Food Even Better Cooking School”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

"The best restaurant in Chiang Mai, and maybe the best in the world!!”,

"vegetarian food with soul"

Not much I can add to these reviews, the food is an absolute must taste for every foody in town. His home made drinks made entirely from scratch cost 40 Baht just like a can of coke and are beyond delicious. Main dishes go for 70 Baht. which is cheap even if he would sell his food from a street stall and is just outrageously cheap considering what you are getting and where you are eating it.

COOKING SCHOOL

If you are into food, care were it comes from, how it is cooked and wonder what makes Thai Food so delicious you have come to the right place. The difference to other cooking schools is that it is a Restaurant First and Cooking School Second!

Costs: 1500 Baht, a bit more pricier than the other ones in town and here is why its worth your money:

Duang is a (vegeterian) cook with his heart and soul. He cares about food and wants to teach you everything about it he knows. So instead of teaching you to make 10 dishes in three hours (what a sad waste of food...) like other schools you will have two separate private sessions with him. Usually one just before lunch and one just before dinner. In each session you get to choose one menu consisting of three dishes you want to learn and eat afterwards. This is not a group experience, you won't be sharing his time with 10 others - these are private sessions just you and your friends and loved ones.

I can't stress how important this was for me: He actually teaches you how to make curry paste, tamarind juice and other stuff from SCRATCH and the many different ways you can use them as a base for all sorts of dishes. This sort of knowledge exchange would be impossible in a bigger group session. He can even tell you what to replace the ingredients with if you can't get his in your country of choice! His extensive experience as in the catering business come to light when he teaches you the "egg net" and other neat decoration tricks.

Ladies and Gentlemen - this is food, eating and cooking at its finest for an incredible low price!

In case you are still having doubts: YOU ARE GETTING TWO SEPARATE PRIVATE COOKING SESSIONS WITH A WORLD CLASS CHEF FOR 1500 BAHT - any more questions? Go ask Duang and tell him i said hi!

Just down the lane from the popular 3 Sis, Brown Rice provides excellent vegetarian thai food cooked with real love. The 'tom yum' drink highly-recommended. Essentially a one-man show, suspect might be slow if busy, but worth the wait.

“The best restaurant in Chiang Mai, and maybe the best in the world!!”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

The food here is divine. We tried a few different items on the menu and each one was cooked by Duong, the master chef himself. If I had more time in Chiang Mai, I would have worked my way through the whole menu. The drinks are also unusual and refreshing.
It is important to keep in mind that time is irrelevant when on holidays. If time matters to you, and you get impatient with slow service, then perhaps Brown Rice isn't for you. There are many restaurants catering to tourists who want fast service and beer. But if you want exciting, challenging, innovative vegetarian food based on Thai classics, then Brown Rice is worth a wait. Take along a diary or a book and sip slowly on a lime ginger ice tea and relax. Just to think that each order is cooked by Duong himself from scratch- and each dish is a taste sensation and a visual feast also. meat eaters won't notice any difference. My photos don't do this justice to the gorgeous presentation as we already got stuck into the food before I remembered to pull out my camera.
I am going to give Brown Rice my personal top restaurant award of the year. I can't wait for his boooks to be translated into English.
