The Orchird Hotel is hotel is a 10-15 minute taxi ride from the airport at a cost of 120 Baht (2.50 GBP). It is an old Thai style hotel with a lot of dark wood. It is in a good location near the North West corner of the moat and next to Central, Huay Kaew Rd. Shopping Centre which is the second largest shopping centre in Chiang Mai. The hotel has been one that I have stayed in several times over the years because of its location next to the shopping centre but as I have commented on previous occasions the owners do very little to update, improve and modernise it. There is no in room safety box and when I went to get one at reception at 8pm the two young persons on duty had difficulty finding the keys to open the boxes. Eventually they told me they were all full but I suspected they simply did not know how to open them. That proved correct when they suddenly managed to get the right key and give me a box. In the room there was no coffee or tea making equipment but there were two free bottles of water. The room was clean and reasonably comfortable although the bathroom was old and the water was a fine spray out of the sink tap. The bed and pillows afforded a good sleep. The shower head in the bath was below my eyes so I had to bend down when taking a shower. I am not particularly tall at 6ft. The toilet was also that old style making it necessary to put the toilet lid down or reach behind it to get to the lever to flush it and it is necessary to hold the level down to ensure it flushes. The pool is perhaps one of the biggest hotel pools in Chiang Mai but several years ago I mentioned to the management that the steps going into them only extending a short way into the water making it difficult to climb out. Nothing has been done to remedy this minor but annoying fault which could have easily been fixed cheaply. The in room free WIFI internet worked well and the TV had several English news channels. On this occasion I did not book breakfast since it is mainly Thai style and for a late riser like myself there are better options in the shopping mall. The hotel has room service but it stops at midnight.
