Chiang Mai Orchid Hotel
Ranked #241 of 392 Hotels in Chiang Mai
Reviewed May 5, 2013

The Orchird Hotel is hotel is a 10-15 minute taxi ride from the airport at a cost of 120 Baht (2.50 GBP). It is an old Thai style hotel with a lot of dark wood. It is in a good location near the North West corner of the moat and next to Central, Huay Kaew Rd. Shopping Centre which is the second largest shopping centre in Chiang Mai. The hotel has been one that I have stayed in several times over the years because of its location next to the shopping centre but as I have commented on previous occasions the owners do very little to update, improve and modernise it. There is no in room safety box and when I went to get one at reception at 8pm the two young persons on duty had difficulty finding the keys to open the boxes. Eventually they told me they were all full but I suspected they simply did not know how to open them. That proved correct when they suddenly managed to get the right key and give me a box. In the room there was no coffee or tea making equipment but there were two free bottles of water. The room was clean and reasonably comfortable although the bathroom was old and the water was a fine spray out of the sink tap. The bed and pillows afforded a good sleep. The shower head in the bath was below my eyes so I had to bend down when taking a shower. I am not particularly tall at 6ft. The toilet was also that old style making it necessary to put the toilet lid down or reach behind it to get to the lever to flush it and it is necessary to hold the level down to ensure it flushes. The pool is perhaps one of the biggest hotel pools in Chiang Mai but several years ago I mentioned to the management that the steps going into them only extending a short way into the water making it difficult to climb out. Nothing has been done to remedy this minor but annoying fault which could have easily been fixed cheaply. The in room free WIFI internet worked well and the TV had several English news channels. On this occasion I did not book breakfast since it is mainly Thai style and for a late riser like myself there are better options in the shopping mall. The hotel has room service but it stops at midnight.

Ok, so long gone are the days of Princess Di staying here but if you are looking for a solid, decent place to stay this fits the bill. As always Agoda is your best bet for a cheap rate. It is next to a shopping centre. Good base for exploring the city. They have adjoining rooms if needed. Nice little touches hint at a more glamorous time when the hotel would have been on top (little orchid arrangment delivered as a welcome, fruit, etc). Cute.

The orchid is quite an old hotel, however if you are on a budget and don't want to stay in a guesthouse in the middle of nowhere this is a great alternative. There are lots of Mosquitos in the hotel and rooms, the rooms are not the most modern and the bathroom is a bit dingy HOWEVER the service is great, location is unbeatable, plenty of things to do in Chiang Mai anyway so you should be out from your hotel room as much as possible anyway!! Stayed here twice now and would stay again; it's also nice to say that you've stayed in the same hotel as the King of Thailand (albeit 30 years apart!!)

We booked into our executive room on January 30th to stay until February 15th as were there to get dental work done.We were pretty tired when we got there having traveled from Melbourne & Singapore to get there. It was a very nice spacious room and we decided to have a shower and the shower wouldn't work. Not only that but the toilet leaked and no electric jug to make a cup of tea. Not a good start so I went down to reception and asked for the manager who came out to see me.I told her what the situation was and she said if it is O.K they would shift us in the morning and also up-grade us.
Well what an up-grade.We were moved to the top floor and into a Junior Suite.Fantastic.
I can't talk highly enough about this place as the staff were fantastic right through including the breakfast staff.Nothing was a problem.
Even though they are refurbishing, I would recommend this property and would stay there again.
As a bonus there is a large shopping complex right next door which includes a couple of Thai food halls and supermarket and you can get a very good meal for a maximum 40 bht. amazing.

Although the Chiangmai Orchid hotel may have lost some of its previous grandeur as it aged, it still offers good value for money for the services provided.

My wife and I have stayed in Chiangmai for five years from 2003. We made many friends there and have travelled to Chiangmai almost every year since we left Thailand in early 2008. everytime we visit Chingmai my wife insistes on staying at the Chiangmai orchid.

The buffet breakfast is decent, the rooms are spacious and there is an old charm about the place. The spa massage was good value and the hotle also has a decent pool and gym.

The reason why we keep going back to this hotel is mailny because of its location for convenient transportation, many good food places nearby and the mall just beside it.

I guess we are contented with the place because of our familiarity with Chiangmai and the Chiangmai Orchid hotel.
