The Imperial Mae Ping Hotel
Ranked #66 of 387 Hotels in Chiang Mai

The other people writting reviews have got it correct. This is a good location - I have stayed here 6 times. Good if you rent a car, tour or walk.

The hotel is quite basic but very clean and comfortable. it is NOT a hotel you want to spend hours and hours in sitting by the pool.

I will return again if I am back in CM and look forwards to the same level of comfort.

Stayed here with my wife, on our visit to Chiang Mai. Grand structure, and can be viewed from a distance. The hotel looks like it must have been the best in Chiang Mai some years ago. Its an olden style hotel. Some top diplomats from Lao and Pakistan were staying there when we were there.
Nevertheless it meets all basic needs and functions one requires. The rooms were decent and clean enough. They have 2 pools, where you can unwind in the evening. The breakfast is very good, with a large spread.
The beauty is the location. Very close to the Bazaars and everything like 7/11's, pharmacies etc, are within 5 minute walking distance.
The service is pretty good, but the staff doesn't smile too much, but never the less, they are very helpful.
The Wifi is super, and I used Skype and Viber extensively from my hotel room.
The view from some of the rooms, is pretty neat, with mountains in far sight.
I would recommend this hotel to people who need clean, neat and basic accommodation in Chiang Mai, with all amenities, at a decent price.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a mountain view. They are at the backside of the hotel.

I have been a guest at Mae Ping hotel almost since the opening in the 80´s. I have considered the Mae Ping hotel as my home while in Chiangmai. After an absence of 9 years I was really looking forward to visit the hotel again. But this time I was really disappointed. I can truely say that, as far as I can see, no significant improvement have been done in the hotel for all these years! It really looks worn out, and run down, and this includs the furniture, the carpent, and many other items. Even the breakfastroom is just the same as ten years ago, and the pot serving coffee must be from 2. World War!!
The people working at Mae Ping is friendsly, as always, and they are not included in my complains. But unless you want to lose guests like me, I think the management or the owner should do something to keep Mae Ping among the great places in Chiangmai.

Dear Drammen
Thank you for your time to post here on Trip Advisor and for your recent stay here with us in Chiang Mai. Your comments are very much appreciated and noted. It is not the truth the hotel has not done any improvement over the last 9 years. Much has been invested in Fire Life and Safety and other significant areas such as energy saving. In all our outlets the carpets have been changed and further improvements are in the pipeline. We do hope to have a chance to welcoming you back in the near future and please do contact the undersigned.

Hotel has great potential but is very outdated and never felt clean. Hotel staff indifferent.
Good location in Chiang Mai, close to restaurants and Night Bazaar. This was the only hotel in Thailand where English was a problem.

Highly recommend this hotel. They have the best location, right next to the night market. The service was very nice and the staff was friendly.
Breakfast, has a lot of selection. The Chinese restaurant they have was very good as well.

We spent three nights here over Vesak Day weekend. It's clear the property was once a grand resort - very sad that it's fallen into disrepair.

Pros:

- very friendly and helpful staff.
- well-priced and delicious lunch buffet (assuming you eat only the Thai food and are wise enough to stay away from the Western selection).
- beautiful building and ground - well laid-out with interesting features.
- very well-located and well-known by all taxi and tuk tuk drivers.
- cheap accommodation.

Cons:

- our room had a strong stale smoke smell to it.
- the carpets, furniture etc are very old and tired.
- the spa is very expensive.

3 of us stayed recently at this hotel for 4 nights. The staff were pleasant overall, although there were some issues with English. When we arrived and checked in, our room STUNK of smoke and other things I prefer not to guess what. This hotel is supposedly smoke free, not just the floor, so we were promptly shifted to another room on the same floor, which was 100% better!Apparently, we were upgraded to the 10th floor to begin with, so I don't know what the other lower floors were like.We found the room/bathroom comfortable, but VERY old and in need of updating. The TV was old and not flat screen, so consequently, the picture quality was very poor as was the reception and the number of stations available. Now, I know we are not there to watch TV, but late at night, it would have been nice to relax and watch something decent after a day full of touring in the heat! There was also no power points next to the bed, and my husband uses a cpap machine. Reception didn't understand our request for an extension lead, so we had to go and buy one with 4 points on it, as you couldnt just buy an extension lead like you can here in Australia.
Most of the staff were polite and helpful, and the food was of good quality and variety for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast was very busy, but that didn't bother us; think there were a few conferences going on, so the people were like locusts, but there was plenty of food for all of us!The chinese restaurant also served great food. It was only a 10 min walk to the night markets which were amazing, and there was plenty of Thai massage available both on the hotel premises and the street, all of which were excellent and clean. The internet was really non-existant, and there was no-one on reception that knew how to fix the problem. I went up to the Business Centre and was able to use the internet at a good speed! We might come back to Chiang Mai, but not sure if we would stay here again unless it has a massive face lift. I guess you get what you pay for here. I would rate it 3 star for accomodation, but 4.5 star for food!

Dear Mrs Brimich Bass
Thank you for taking the time and post here on Trip Advisor and for choosing our hotel for your stay here in Chiang Mai. Your comprehensive and detailed information about your stay is much appreciated. Plans for a face lift are being prepared. Although we wish to keep our hotel smoke-free, unfortunately at times we have guests who do not follow the rules and cause the stunk in another wise smoke free environment.
Kind regards from The Imperial Mae Ping Team and Peter Schnyder - General Manager
