Holiday Inn Chiang Mai
Ranked #54 of 394 Hotels in Chiang Mai
Reviewed January 18, 2013

Stayed in the Holiday Inn for 7 nights. What a lovely hotel. I remember when it was the Sheraton. A few changes but still as nice. As you enter the hotel, you are greeted by the staff and you walk into the big entrance and reception area. Nice and clean. Reception staff were very friendly and very helpful. I went for the king Executive River View room which was lovely. Large room with large bathroom. Bathroom had separate bath and shower which is always nice. Hotel provide shower gels, etc if you require. The bedroom is carpeted and was clean and tidy. Nice views over the city and river. But looking back at it. I probably only looked out the window a couple of times. Next time I would probably go for a Superior Room which is just as big. Bed was very comfortable with nice pillows. Hotel has wifi. I had 6 days free, but you could always ask for another code. In the bar they also have wifi and they were very happy to give you the code. Bar staff very friendly and remembered what you drank. They have live music most nights starting around 9pm. Not too loud. They also have a huge tv in the bar which was showing most sports. If you wanted the sun. Just out from the bar they have a sun deck which looks over the river. I only had two meals at the hotel. But they were very good. Good quality. Nice Tom yum goong. Hotel has a nice pool area with lots of sun loungers, both around the pool, under the shaded area and in the sun area. Getting a drink wasnt that easy. Staff not always present. But again when they were. Very friendly. Hotel location is only 5 minutes to the night market. Outside the hotel there are always tuk tuks waiting. It was between 100 and 150 baht. So in all a VERY good hotel. Great staff. Away from the hussle and bussle. A must stay at a reasonable price!

Room Tip: Looking at the room descriptions. I would say all rooms are nice.

My husband and I visited Chiang mai for 12 nights and stayed at the Holiday Inn for the whole 12 nights.

On arrival we were met with a smile and a tradional Thai welcome.

First impressions of hotel were excellent the reception area has a great wow factor and was spotlessly clean.

The staff were very friendly and attentive, the conceirge were also very helpful. Checking in was so straightforward and we were instantly shown to our room and only a few minutes later did our luggage arrive.

First Impressions of room: - The room was very spacious and spotlessly clean, there was a very large comfy bed with a choice of pillows (which was a nice touch). The bathroom was a bit small and basic but it had everything we needed.

The room safe was free which was nice and alll the bottled water was free also.

One small complaint we had was the bathroom became very damp and smelly as there was no ceiling fan, but please just ask them to unlock the windows. We put up with it for days until we finally asked for the windows to be unlocked.

The drinks at the bar are traditional UK bar prices but its nice to either start or finish with a drink at the bar. In the evenings there was some kind of entertainment either a band or a singer.

We were surprised that the hotel was described as being close to the town. It is NOT walking distance, however just hire a Tuk Tuk at the bottom of the drive and haggle down the price. My thoughts were to pay 70 - 80 Bhart and then occassionally tip.

There is a small launderette opposite the hotel, down the side of the hospital which was a god send they were very cheap. The hotel prices were extortionate for laundry services.

The pool area was lovely and clean and the gym was very modern.

BEWARE of traditional Thai massages - they hurt!! They are not our relaxing perception of massages but we were not aware that our bodies could bend and stretch the ways they were.

Trips worth doing:

1. Doi Suthep - has 240+ steps to the top but well worth it
2. Tiger kingdom where we went into the cages with them
3. Chiang Mai zoo (you do pay the tourist price, avoid the mono rail and use shuttle, much easier)
4. Orchid and butterfly farm.
5. The Thai national park is worth a visit
6. The city park is lovely.
7. The elephant camp (although I didnt like the show) the elephant ride was fantastic
8. The night market
9. The maeping river tour was good incorporating the 'Thai Farmers House'

AVOID the traditional dancing shows we were so disppointed

Boom Travel in the old city were amazing, they were a lot cheaper and we got so much more for our money and local advice.

Back to the hotel there is a free shuttle bus to the night market, phone down and book, which is well worth doing as we spent most evenings trawlling for a bargain.

Breakfasts were ok, not amazing there were traditional English breakfasts, continental and Thai but it was all so cold no matter what time we went down.

The staff were amazing and were so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble.
We would definitely recommed the Holiday Inn.

We were very pleased with the staff at the hotel! They went out of their way to help us find what we were looking for. Definitely need to get a ride into the old city, the shuttle to the night market is helpful for that in the evening. We were pleasantly surprised to find we had wi-fi and buffet breakfast included in our stay. Only downsides were a moldy looking ceiling in the shower area and not a lot of information in your room to tell you what was available in the hotel or the area (i.e room service, pool, etc), sometimes you just don't want to go down to the concierge desk in your pjs to ask ( :

We spent there five nights.Hotel is placed in few minutes drive to the center(200 thb by tuk tuk) and 100 meters from a market where you can find all kind of fruits.I read that hotel had only one elevator. There are five now(decembre 2012).The hotel is clean and the restaurant is good for breakfast(I didn t try lunch or dinner).Only problem I had was the bathroom door that blocked 4 times and I had to call the reception who sent someone to solve the problem.I think this hotel is a good choice if you want to visit the north of Thailad.

This hotel is really nice and clean. I can't comment on value as it was part of a package so I don't know exact prices but we asked for mid range and out of all hotels we stayed in on this holiday this was the best. The only downside is that it is on the outskirts of the city, however, the red taxis are really cheap and the hotel put on some complimentary buses to the markets. I would stay there again.

Arrived late in the evening and was pleasantly surprised when I walked into the reception of the hotel. Staff through out the hotel were very friendly and proffesional. I spent 6 nights here. There are areas in the hotel that are dated and could do with some tlc. I had a view of the river from the room but to be honest its not an amazing view. The room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was good. Only ate dinner in the restaurant once but the food was really good as was the service.
The hotel is not in the center of town but there is always a tuk tuk outside that will take you where ever you want to go.
