We booked a hilltribe 2 day tour and a one day sightseeing tour to chiang rai. We loved them both. They came to pick us up from the train station and waited for us 5 hours because the train was deleyed. They also drove us to the station when we were leaving. It was a great experiance. I would recomend them to everyone.

“Hilltribe Trek”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2013

I recently booked a 2day/1nt Hilltribe Trek through Authentic Thai Tours, after reading the TA reviews. Nikhom was fantastic with the communication, and gave me a lot of confidence.

For information of anyone else thinking of doing the trek, I will give you a detailed synopsis, to better inform you. I guess some of the tours must be outsourced, as I was picked up in a pick-up truck with 'Namkhong Travel' written on it. There were 10 of us on the truck, and it got a bit cramped. The driver is merely a taxi driver. I wouldn't even know his name. We stopped at the Orchid Nursery and a local market, and all he did was tell us to get off and how long we had. No other info.

We arrived at the start point, with a lot of other tour groups - there seems to be a lot of tour operators providing the same experiences. We had lunch, were told to make sure we had water on us, and off we went with our tour guide. In fact, no one knew the name of our tour guide until we arrived at the village! It was just a case of follow him and stop when he felt like it. Not much interaction on Day 1.

As for the difficulty, it is difficult. Being the rainy season, the ground is wet, and there are a few tricky parts. The first 30 mins was pretty good, and I felt ok. Then it got harder. We could see a village at the top of a mountain and someone asked if we were heading there. He said, 'Yeah' and laughed, so everyone thought he was kidding. He wasn't kidding. For over an hour, it felt like we were just walking up and up, like flights of stairs. I at least had appropriate footwear. Some on the tour and had canvas shoes, like Converse or slip-on canvas shoes. They were certainly destroyed by the end.

It took just a bit over 2 hours to get to the village. Then our guide just left us at the longhouse, and that was the last we saw him until dinner. The village itself is set up for tourists. There were about 3 or 4 tour groups staying at the village, in different longhouses. I walked around the village, and it certainly seemed like it was split in two - one side was the 'real' village, and the other being the one where tourists are kept. It was still nice to see the village, and the view was amazing. You literally are above the clouds. No electricity, but they do have running water and even a shower - cold water only.

Day Two was the trek down the hill. A bit of light drizzle, and the wet ground made it an arduous exercise, with a few close shoves for losing your footing. Those in canvas shoes had next to no traction at all. All tour groups must do the same trail on the way down, with at least 10 different groups arriving at the waterfall (which looked amazing), and then everyone following the river to the end point. Lunch, then an elephant ride, which was a bit sad, seeing the riders hit the elephants they way they do. One of the riders was even hitting one of the elephants over the read quite hard, and pricking another elephant with a knife tip. After that, it was white water rafting and bamboo rafting. You will get soaking wet, so be prepared. Then the long trip back to Chiang Mai, in the back of the pick-up truck.

The tour cost 1300 baht, so I was only expecting the basic, which is what I got. Personally, I would have probably appreciated a bit of a slower, longer trek, just so I could have enjoyed the environment we were walking through.

I have read the good reviews for Authentic Thai Tours, so I hope this is just a one-off, and only because they combined with other tours for the trek. And it might be a consideration to ensure you have the right footwear. The suggestion was comfortable walking shoes or sandals. Although the locals can do it in flip-flops, I would not even consider wearing sandals. Good hiking shoes/boots with a bit of grip definitely required.

“Excellent customer service and a great tour guide.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2013 via mobile

We booked this tour for Chiang Mai a while prior to us travelling. It was the best thing we did. Nikhom was quick at responding to emails with ideas of tours etc.

At the airport his wife was waiting with a sign of our name and a photo so make sure you have a photo of those travelling easy to hand. His wife gave us some water and a free return transfer to our hotel.

Nikhom picked us up early in his 4x4 and did we need it!! In one day we went elephant trekking, trekked in the jungle to see a waterfall, white water rafting, bamboo rafting (which nearly sank), Tiger Kingdom and the orchid farm. So tiring but highly recommended we would never have seen this otherwise.

En route Nikhom stopped for fruit from a local stall and after speaking to him about my girl friend's mosquito bite he stopped and got us some herbal balm - very kind of him.

Nikhom recommended for our second day that we visit the Doi Suthep temple at night to see the monks praying. This we did and it was fabulous, when else would you get to see monks praying and Chiang Mai city from so high up at night?

Our 2 day tour with Nikhom was the highlight of our trip. His tours are tailored and he is such a nice man who looks after his clients with the upmost respect and courtesy. If you book any tour with him you will see more than others that is a certainty. If we were here longer we would have booked another tour. Book it - you will love it!!

“Chiang Mai adventure!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2013

Nkkhom and Authentic Thai Tours were a fabulous way to explore Chiang Mai. Nikhom could not have been a more gracious guide, and he had a wonderful laugh and sense of humor that kept us smiling. We arrived at the airport and he was there to greet us on time, then escorted us to an: elephant ride, trek to a waterfall with delicious pad Thai lunch wrapped in a bamboo leaf, white water rafting, bamboo raft float, visit to the Long neck hill tribe, then back to our hotel. Nikhom made the entire day run smoothly- action packed but all wonderful experiences. Having him as a private guide meant no waiting in lines and exceptional good service. Nikhom shared information about all the sites we visited, and gave us good suggestions for the rest of stay in Chiang Mai. We highly recommend his services!

“Great way to end our Chiang Mai visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2013

Our visit to Chiang Mai was completed by a visit to Doi Suthep and our wonderful guide Nikhom. We did a half day tour with Nikhom before catching our aftnoon flight. Not only did we learn quite a bit from this former monk but he completed our food quest by bringing us to the best koi soi in town. Nikhom was very attentive and is genuinely a nice guy.

We also booked our adventure tour (biking, elephant ride, white water rafting) a few days earlier through Nikhom (our guide for that trip was AK) and had the best time. Class 2-3 rafting was just the right amount of adventure for me and our 10 year old son!
