“Lovely people, I had a great time”

Mojito House is, as mentioned, in essentially an ideal place. Its right by Sompet market in the old city, maybe a 2 second walk from the main road. However, the location isn't the only thing that makes it good. The accommodations, while a bit shabby, are affordable and comfortable. Anyone who complains about that is a bit stuck up, to tell the truth. What I found out about Mojito house is that they have an incredibly friendly and personable staff who will help you with just about anything you need. I stayed there for 8 days in 3 different rooms and, the whole time, the owners and the man who sells tour took care of everything for me. I'd highly recommend it for anyone coming to Chiang Mai, especially for Songkran,

10 years ago when backpacker pads were supposed to be dirty and barebones, Mojito House may have earned a 4. However the world has changed and low-priced hostels offering great social environments, cheap bars, and clean environments have sprung up to serve a new batch of travellers who are budget conscious but don't feel the need to drink from the world's toilets and call it champagne. Places like Little Bird and Diva House are examples but really in Chiang Mai one needs only to hit the pavement and visit the plethora of offerings in order to see what I mean. If Mojito House was the cheapest option I may even be tempted to give it a 3, but at 100 baht for a dorm you can get better for 70-80 on the other side of the canal.

I booked a cheap single at 150 baht. This got me a stuffy small room with a broken fan and a mattress on the floor with more springs than soft stuff. The one shared raw concrete bathroom is shared between two floors and the main room downstairs so you can imagine the condition its in. My friends were staying in the upstairs dorms, which have their own bathroom so you're a little better off up there. In fact the dorms have better mattresses as well and offer a much better overall value at the expense of security and privacy.

There is no bar, and the juice cafe is a bit of a joke. The staff are generally indifferent, occasionally a little friendly, but mostly look miserable and have usually their friends drop by at night for some drinks. Their is no owner on site and any time that happens the staff tend to do whatever they want. I think if there weren't tours to sell they'd have no-one there at all.

There were a couple of good things about Mojito House but they had nothing to do with the guesthouse itself. The location is right beside the fresh food market so there is plenty of fresh cheap eats around. Fellow travellers were awesome and I made a few friends who I still see along the way through my travels.

All in all you could possibly do worse than Mojito House but if you're willing to do some walking and some research you can definitely do much better for the same or less.

Room Tip: take the dorm... some rooms do have private bath but you can do better elsewhere for the same price.
