“One of my favourite wats”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

This is not a smart or tourist centric temple, rather a simple local temple with a lovely calm atmosphere, albeit only just off the moat. We go here regularly for a re-charge of the batteries and to look at the elephant statues, hence our referring to this among ourselves as "the elephant temple".

If you want to see a proper temple, rather than one of the wealthy and tourist filled examples, this is a great place to go.

Note that the TA map puts this on the east side of the moat, whereas it is on the north side.

“One great place to be Buddhist”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

The oldest Wat in Chiang Mai is quiet, open and relaxing even for somati if that's what you are after. I visit on a regular basis because it makes me feel good.

“Best Temple We Visited”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

This temple is beautiful - lots of ornate carvings and interesting statues. And there are hardly any tourists around, so you have the place nearly to yourself. Definitely worth a visit as it is more beautiful and picturesque than the standard tourist temples - and it's free!

“Worth the walk!”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

This cool little temple is well worth the walk. It's often overlooked in Chiang Mai, but the elephant sculpture alone is amazing. Make time to head out there, even if that means skipping one of the more famous (re: touristy) temples in the city center. As long as you have a map, it's not hard to find.

Once you're inside the small temple grounds, take a nice stroll and then head back to the amazing elephant carvings. The mural is carved out of what looks like roots from an old tree and they wind about hypnotically. Then there's a standing elephant that's striking, too.

Go see it, you won't be sorry!

“Must See in Chiang Mai”
Reviewed February 7, 2013

You can skip most of the other over-hyped glitzy Wats in Chiang Mai. Go to this one and spend a morning or early afternoon (best light for photos). It is not clogged with tourists because its not on the maps and the architecture is fabulous. It is very quiet and serene the way a Wat should be. It's just down the street from the songthaew stop for Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, so when you hop off after your trip up the mountain, venture down the street to this Wat before heading back into the Old City.
