“Beautiful jungle escape”
Reviewed August 21, 2014

This was the second trek I have completed in Thailand and by far the best. The main difference to me was the smaller group and the fact we actually left the tourist trail, in fact the only other people we saw whilst walking were a small group of locals picking leaves.

I'd asked for an all round more demanding trek and the first couple of km were very easy, well maintained trails running over hanging bridges and through amazing waterfalls. Unbelievably beautiful but I remember starting to think its not really the challenge I was after. Then the guide stopped and pointed to a lesser trail going up, very steep and disappearing into thick jungle. It had gone from a walk to feeling like an intrepid explorer, which was great.

We reached the top of this very steep ridge and I was knackered, think the heat had taken more out of me than expected. Luckily we stopped for lunch and after some nice Thia food and a mixture of fruit. We set off down a long winding trail that followed this mountain ridge to our destination. All in all a perfect mixture of terrain, scenery and intensity.

“Amazing!”
Reviewed June 13, 2014

We are so glad we chose this tour, because it was one of the best experiences we have had in Thailand. Our tour guide Chai was very knowledgable about the tribe, nature and basically everything we asked! He made our tour very interesting and fun and we felt very looked after. The place we stayed was beautiful, and we were fed extremely well with so many delicious, traditional food! They also catered for one vegetarian in our group.
We chose this tour because it was the only one that didn't include elephant riding, and seemed more ethically run than various other hill tribe walks we looked at and I would definitely recommend this tour! Everyone was so kind and treated us so well and the surrounding was beautiful and it created an irreplaceable experience!

“Historic Opium Trail - Doi Pui”
Reviewed March 16, 2014

It comes no surprise that this relatively small but highly experienced company has won the Viatour 'Best Local Operator' for 2014. There won't be a busload of people with you, there will be a guide who really knows his stuff and knows how to articulate it. A bush walk is a just a bush walk unless you have someone who knows what all the trees and bushes are, what they are (or were) used for and their relevance to his family, their life and indeed ancestors. Then its a mixture of pharmacy, spice rack and supermarket. You also get the perspective as to how this has changed, and not always as radically as might think. All this is also not too far from Chiang Mai and even the journey to the trail head was beautiful. Frans clearly cares about what is happening in what is now his home and it shows.

“exploring mae kampong”
Reviewed March 1, 2014

I usually don't rate tours (because I hardly go on them), but I'm glad we did the one-day trip with Tiger Trail it was brilliant!

Frans and Aom were great with working with us to suggest an itinerary tour that would best suit my pregnant self and my 60 year old mother visiting over Chinese New years -- we ended up booking a private day tour to Mae Kampong, located in the mountains about an hours drive from Chiang Mai. It was refreshing to get out of the city and the setting was pretty -- waterfall, trickling streams, leafy paths, lovely coffee shop with a terrace overlooking the valley …

Along with our guide, we met up with another local community guide who showed us around her village, explaining the local way of life; we also learned to identify certain plants and how the villagers used them as herbal remedies, etc.

As far as we could see, we were the only visitors to the village that day. The community was just going about their business and at no point were we made to feel like tourists being pressured to buy the village handicrafts (namely tea pillows, which we had to go on a mission to hunt down as my mother couldn't seem to get enough of them for gifting).

At another time I probably would've booked the tour that included ziplining in the vicinity.

Our guide Kate and driver were lovely company and made sure everything was running smoothly from pickup to drop off.. in fact we ended up booking a second tour through Tiger Trail at the end of the trip!

“Chiang Dao Day Trek”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

Tiger Trails arranged a truly memorable experience for us, they were helpful, reliable and the quality of our trek was excellent all round. Our guide, Hod, was excellent - normally working as a farmer in the off-season he was a lovely person to walk with - knowledgeable and genuinely keen.

There are a number of options for trekking up Chiang Dao, ranging from a single day up and down, with lunch at the top of one peak, through a two or three day trek with camping at a small site just below the peak and a sunset climb to one peak and a sunrise one on another. The single day trek is pretty hard work and if you want to take more time in this wonderful scenic area the overnight trek and a stay in a tent is well worth considering instead of the day trek.
