“Some good and mostly not so - you get what you pay for.”
Reviewed February 21, 2014

Stayed a night here and must admit had very mixed feelings. Rooms were clean, new and IBIS Styles in decor, funky and bright.

So the good:
Rooms nice enough as per above
Breakfast ok
Cheap

The Bad
No wine on the menu - I thought they were joking.
On a main road
Rooms not sound proof - could clearly hear the TV in the next room.
Second building fairly inconvenient to get to and from
Small pool
Staff need training, generally pretty poor.

I have been to Chiang Mai quite a few times now and will be returning but not likely to be staying here again. Ok, if you are travelling on the cheap and don't mind low levels of service for a clean room. For me I'll be paying a little more for the little extra's, like a wine list and no noise from the room next door.

Room Tip: Get a room at the end of the corridor - not one anywhere near the lifts.

As a regular traveller who stays 99% of the time at an Accor hotel, I must say that this one has a lot of room for improvement.

Firstly, the staff seems to be 100% interns. They seem to have all started yesterday and don't yet know what they are doing. English levels are consistently low that you can not ask for any help or any question at all. No one looks at you as you come and go, and no smiles nor hello. On checkin, no information given on things to do, no map, and no tourist information in the lobby.

As for the rooms, I paid extra for a deluxe room (room 1304) with a supposedly "breathtaking view of the city". The room was indeed large, but quite empty. The bed is comfortable and the arm chairs large and nice. The view from the room was not a breathtaking view of the city, but rather a view of the entrance and the highway in front.

The bathroom toilet blocked and overflowed twice and we had to have the technician come. No hot water in the sink, so difficult to shave, but the water in the shower was scalding hot or icy cold - nothing in the middle.

Breakfast was inedible, so it's a good thing there was a Dunkin Donuts across the street.

Wifi was ok, but rather slow.

TV in the room worked, but the signal was poor, making the image freeze every 3-4 minutes so impossible to watch a show.

The location is quite far from everything. Most of the hotel is under construction so on approach you feel like you are entering a construction site, not a hotel, but once inside the lobby is nice and modern and colorful.

You can take the red bus into town for 20 THB per person. It takes about 20 minutes.
At night, to come back, the red bus is more expensive, about 50 THB per person, because the location is out of the way. Most drivers do not know the hotel so they have to call for directions, but are happy to do so.

Lots of room for improvement here - even for a 2 star hotel.

I recenlty stayed at the Ibis Styles and it was a clean hotel. It is currently going through construction so there is alot of noise. It also doesn't help when the walls are paper thin. Also if you are a person who needs wifi I don't recommend this hotel. The wifi was very spotty. The breakfast buffett was great. The location of the hotel is not the best and tuk tuks never want to take you to the hotel. Also the drain in our bathroom had a slow leak so everytime we showered it filled up like a bathtub. I think this hotel will be nice when it has finished all the renovations and worked out all the kinks.

For the price ibis styles Chiang Mai's not bad, just a little plain and as I said, feels like a room at IKEA.

The staff is well trained The free breakfast buffet is a nice touch. Location wise it's located close to the zoo and Doi Sutep so it's a good choice if you are paying a visit to either of those locations.

I do enjoy that you can book your room, without a credit card and if you cut your stay short they don't charge you for the early departure.

A great hotel for those who want to stay in the middle of Chiang Mai town. The hotel looks modern and fresh and is only 10 min walking distance from Central department store and just 5 mins from various markets and other small cafe restaurants. Check-in was simple and efficient. English communication was easy.

The rooms were fresh and simple. My room was a king sized bed and were a decent size with plenty of room to place your suitcase and hang your clothes. Internet was free and reasonably quick. The washroom included basic amenities such as shampoo and soap. There is a great selection of TV channels both English and Thai. Since the weather was cool I didn't need to use the aircon so couldn't tell if it was any good at cooling the room. Breakfast buffet was bundled with the room price and included both western and Thai dishes of reasonable selection.

The only downside I remember was that the hotel is located on a main road meaning rooms facing the road get to hear the traffic all night. The pillows were also not feather type meaning they were not as supportive as I would like. Other than that a great place to crash out in CM.
